Delta Airlines Overweight Baggage Fees

When you pack too much luggage in your suitcase, you may have to face overweight luggage fees while traveling with Delta Airlines Inc. The overweight baggage charge is applicable if the weight of checked baggage surpasses the limit set by the respective airline. Your baggage fees will depend on how much your baggage exceeds the limit and the route you are following.

It is advisable to check your baggage allowance and the weight of the bag before leaving for the airport. ✈️

Delta Airlines Baggage Policy

If your luggage goes over the weight or size limits set by Delta Airlines, then you are liable for Delta overweight and oversized baggage fees.

Charges in this category apply to each individual piece of luggage for every flight segment, and the accumulative total can make your travel much more expensive overall.

To avoid unpredictable expenses, it is advisable to weigh your bags and measure them before checking in your bags, since Delta overweight and oversized baggage fees vary according to route and exact excess amount, among other factors.

Bag Weight

Fee

Notes

51 – 70 lbs (23 – 31.75 kg)

$100 USD

Applies to all cabins

71 – 100 lbs (32 – 45.36 kg)

$200 USD

Applies to all cabins

Over 100 lbs

Not permitted

✈️ Important: Overweight and oversized baggage fees cannot be paid by use of Air Miles or SkyMiles. A credit card or cash must be used for payment of these fees at the airport.

In addition to your regular checked bag fees, you will incur overweight fees. For instance, if you check your first bag weighing 55 lbs, you will be charged not only $45 as an ordinary luggage fee but also an additional charge of $100 for overweight luggage.

Current Delta Checked Bag Fees

The prices of checked baggage can multiply the expenses of your journey considerably when you carry more than one bag or if your luggage has exceeded Delta’s accepted weight or dimensions limits. In 2026, Delta’s fees for checked baggage vary subject to your route, kind of fare, class of service, the number of bags, and whether you are eligible for exemption from paying fees due to your Medallion Status or Delta SkyMiles American Express card.

Delta Airlines 2026 Checked Bag Fee Update

The fees presented below apply to Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin customers flying domestically within the United States (including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands).

These fees are calculated on the standard pricing system, meaning they reflect the baseline cost for a typical traveler who does not qualify for any of Delta's common fee waivers.

Specifically, this pricing assumes the traveler holds no Delta SkyMiles American Express Card (which would waive the first bag fee) and has no Medallion Status with the airline (Silver or above, which also includes free bag allowances), and does not qualify for any military exemptions (active-duty personnel traveling on orders are entitled to free checked bags regardless of fare class).

If none of these exceptions apply to you, the rates shown below are the exact fees you will pay per bag, per direction.

Bag

Fee (Each Way)

First standard checked bag (under 50 lbs)

$45 USD

Second standard checked bag (under 50 lbs)

$55 USD

Third checked bag

$200 USD

Bags 4–10

$200 USD each

Please note that all of the prices and policies mentioned here are valid as of August 2026. Flights, prices, and policies may be subject to change without warning. It is advised that the passengers check Delta Airlines' official site for further updates regarding the weight limits of their luggage.

Fee exceptions apply for:

  • Delta SkyMiles Medallion Members – Enhanced baggage allowances
  • Eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express Card Members – First and second bags free on domestic flights
  • Active U.S. military personnel – Special baggage allowances

How to Avoid Delta Baggage Weight Limit Fees

An unanticipated baggage fee at the airport is not something anybody wants to deal with at the beginning of a vacation. Thankfully, avoiding Delta’s overweight baggage charges can be easy as long as you weigh your suitcase before you leave home and utilize your carry-on to your advantage.

Depending on your ticket, cabin, destination, and any applicable Delta perks, there are different baggage allowances you may be subject to, therefore it is essential to go through the rules related to your flight before starting to organize your suitcase. A bit of caution will help you stay within the limits.

How to Avoid Delta Baggage Weight Limit Fees

Dealing with overweight baggage fees is a challenge. But there are simple yet effective ways to make sure that your baggage is under the specified weight limit and therefore save yourself some money.

1. Weigh Your Bags at Home

Buy a luggage scale. Weigh your bags before you head to the airport. This will definitely prevent you from spending more than a hundred dollars on overweight bags.

2. Pack Everything Wisely

Make sure to spread the bulky items across different bags. It will be best if you can keep every bag under 50 lbs if you are in Delta’s Main Cabin or Comfort+. You may put heavy items like books and electronics in the carry-on bag.

3. Make Sure You Know Your Allowances

They offer a higher limit for Delta One and first class passengers — up to 70 lbs (32 kg) per bag, versus 50 lbs (23 kg) per bag in Main Cabin and Comfort+. Therefore, there will be an advantage of 40 pounds of luggage in comparison to passengers in economy class.

4. Simplify Your Journey with Relevant Extra Services

When booking a flight using Trip.com, you can buy baggage allowances and order your airport transportation at the same time. This way, you can know the full price of the flight ticket, including bags, before you finish the transaction. What's more, ordering a private car or shuttle service through Trip.com means you will arrive at the terminal together with your luggage, avoiding the hassle of hauling heavy bags on public transport.

What Happens If Your Bag Is Overweight at Check-In?

If your bag exceeds the Delta first class baggage weight limit at the airport, here's what to expect:

  • You'll be asked to pay the overweight fee: $100 for 51–70 lbs or $200 for 71–100 lbs
  • You may be asked to repack: If you have time, you can move items to another bag or your carry-on to reduce weight
  • Bags over 100 lbs are not accepted: You'll need to ship them as cargo separately

✈️ Pro Tip: Get to the airport in advance. If your luggage exceeds the weight limit, it will be necessary to take the time to pay extra fees or to repack your luggage.

Knowing Delta’s baggage weight limits is important for every traveler in the United States. Usually, the weight limit in economy class is 50 lbs, while the limit in business class is 70 lbs, so knowing at what level you are before you get to the airport can save you money on excessive fees.

The Met is an incredible museum with so much to see that you could easily spend several hours here. I loved walking through the different galleries and seeing art and historical objects from so many cultures and time periods. The building itself is impressive too. I’d recommend choosing a few sections you really want to see beforehand, as the museum is enormous. Definitely one of the highlights of a visit to New York. 🖼️🏛️✨

I bought only a ferry ticket and went to the Statue of Liberty. I was hesitant because I read online that there are free ferries, but I thought it might be far, and I really wanted to enjoy seeing the Statue of Liberty from the sea, so I bought a ticket. The time of day might also be a factor, but I took the 11:00 ferry, and there weren't too many passengers, so I didn't have to rush to secure a good viewing spot. It wasn't crowded, and I had a great view of the Statue of Liberty from the boat. They were selling Statue of Liberty merchandise on the boat, but it was overpriced. There are souvenir shops on the island where you can buy things cheaper than on the boat. There is also a shop next to the souvenir shops that sells sandwiches and drinks, so you can grab a light meal there. There were also terrace seats, but I decided against it because it was windy. I didn't go inside the Statue of Liberty, but I still enjoyed myself thoroughly.

Delta Baggage Size Limits and Oversized Baggage Fees

Weight is not the only measurement Delta checks at the counter – the size of your suitcase matters just as much, and an oversized bag is charged on top of any overweight fee you already owe.

Bag Size (Length + Width + Height)

Fee (Per Bag, Each Way)

Notes

Up to 62 linear inches (157 cm)

Standard checked bag fee

Standard allowance for every cabin

63 – 80 linear inches (161 – 203 cm)

$200 USD

Oversized – charged in addition to your standard bag fee and any overweight fee

Over 80 linear inches (203 cm)

Not permitted

Must be shipped as cargo

Measure your bag fully packed, wheels and handles included, because that is exactly how the check-in agent measures it. On international itineraries the oversize charge can differ from the domestic rate, so confirm the amount for your route before you fly.

Fees also stack. A domestic bag that is both overweight and oversized – for example 55 lbs at 66 linear inches – can cost you the $45 standard checked bag fee, the $100 overweight fee and the $200 oversize fee in a single direction.

✈️ Pro Tip: If only one dimension pushes your suitcase into the oversized bracket, a slightly smaller case is often cheaper than paying $200 each way.

Delta Carry-On Baggage Size and Weight Limits

Checked bags are not the whole story: your carry-on has its own limits, and knowing them can save you from paying an overweight fee at all.

  • Size limit: 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 35 x 23 cm), or 45 linear inches (114 cm) in total, with handles and wheels included.
  • Personal item: One free personal item in addition to your carry-on – a purse, small backpack, laptop bag or diaper bag that fits under the seat in front of you.
  • Weight limit: Delta does not publish a maximum carry-on weight for most flights. The bag simply has to fit in the overhead bin and you have to be able to lift it into place unaided. A small number of departure airports and codeshare partners such as Air France, KLM and Virgin Atlantic do apply their own carry-on weight caps, so check the rules for your specific route.
  • Delta Connection flights with 50 seats or fewer: Only personal items fit on board. Standard carry-ons are pink-tagged, gate-checked free of charge and handed back to you on the jet bridge after landing.

✈️ Pro Tip: If your suitcase is hovering around the 50 lb (23 kg) mark, move dense items such as books, shoes and chargers into your carry-on. Because carry-on bags are not weighed on most routes, a well-packed carry-on is the simplest way to avoid the $100 overweight fee.

How to Pack Efficiently for Delta Airlines

How to Pack Efficiently for Delta Airlines
  • Weigh your bags at home with a portable luggage scale to avoid $100+ overweight fees at the airport
  • Roll your clothes to save space and reduce wrinkles
  • Choose lightweight luggage to maximize packing capacity within Delta's 50 lb limit
  • Keep essentials like passport, boarding pass, and medications in your personal item for easy access
  • Use packing accessories: TSA-approved locks, luggage scales, packing cubes, and compression bags
  • Distribute heavy items across multiple bags—two compliant bags are cheaper than one overweight bag

✈️ Pro Tip: If you want to prevent damage to your luggage and keep it stable while standing, put all heavy items at the bottom of your suitcase, close to the wheels.
