Okinawa Attractions: Best Time to Visit

In Okinawa, the weather is most pleasant from March to May, while July and August are packed with summer vacation crowds—both periods are peak season.

  • Spring: Okinawa’s spring comes early, with cherry blossoms blooming in late January and February. Azaleas, irises, lilies, and hydrangeas follow in full bloom throughout April and May. Early spring is also the prime time for whale watching off Zamami Island.
  • Summer: From June to October, Okinawa’s subtropical summer is perfect for river trekking to waterfalls, exploring beaches, coral reefs, and nearby mangrove swamps. Popular activities include snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, and more.
  • Autumn: After early autumn typhoons, humidity drops while temperatures remain ideal for beach activities and water sports. Autumn also brings exciting cultural events like the Naha Great Tug-of-War Festival and the Shuri Castle Festival.
  • Winter: Winters in Okinawa are mild, averaging around 15°C. Divers can still explore underwater in December, while January marks the start of whale-watching season. Visitors can hike scenic spots like Cape Manzamo or enjoy lantern festivals during the festive season.

Recommended Okinawa Attractions

Okinawa can be easily divided into three major regions—north, central, and south—each with its own distinctive scenery.

Okinawa Attractions #1: Naha Kokusai Street |Southern Okinawa

International Street is the main avenue that symbolizes Okinawa’s commercial prosperity; after World War II it was also known as the “Miracle 1 Kilometer,” and it has maintained that same vibrancy ever since. Lining both sides are major department stores, gourmet restaurants, boutique fashion shops, large shopping malls, all kinds of entertainment venues, and a wide range of trend information and goods—reasonable prices guarantee you’ll head home loaded with great finds.

Okinawa Attractions #2: Makishi Public Market|Southern Okinawa

Makishi Public Market has been around for over 60 years and is known as the Kitchen of Okinawa. Inside, it specializes in all kinds of Okinawan treasures—live seafood, Agu pork, Ishigaki beef, and other fresh ingredients—as well as plenty of local condiments and take-home treats like chili oil and wakame seaweed. On the first-floor food section, you’ll find lots of stalls selling live seafood like lobster, crab, and turban shells. Pick out your favorites and haggle with the vendors at Makishi Public Market, then head up to the restaurants on the second floor to have everything cooked for you and enjoy a seafood feast!

Makishi Market is a must-visit local Okinawa experience! The first floor is filled with fresh seafood and a variety of raw foods. After purchasing, you can take your purchases directly to the second floor for the market to prepare them on site, making it perfect for families or families. Besides seafood, there's also a wide selection of cooked foods and snacks, making it a convenient and lively place. This place offers both foodie and sightseeing experiences, allowing you to experience the authentic flavors and warmth of Okinawa!

The entrance to the market is marked with "Naha City First Makishi Public Market". This is commonly known as the "Makishi Public Market", and is sometimes also called the "Public Market". Originally, it was a traditional market for local residents to buy food they needed for daily life. However, it soon became a low point due to the opening of supermarkets and other large stores in Okinawa. In order to break the downturn, the public market has planned a "cooking on behalf of customers" system, which allows customers to bring the ingredients purchased in the market on the first floor to the cafeteria on the second floor for cooking. This strategy has been successful. In addition to local residents who come to purchase food, there are also a large number of tourists who come here to buy food. The entire floor is divided into areas such as "Fresh Fish", "Meat", and "Fresh Produce". Although you can simply shop here like in a supermarket, one of the main features of the Makishi Public Market is that you can communicate with the store owners while buying things. While purchasing ingredients, in addition to chatting with the owner, you can also ask questions about the ingredients or listen to the store’s explanation. Because most of the shops here operate in this way, as mentioned at the beginning, many local residents also come here to buy.

The seafood was very fresh. The first stall we encountered when we entered the market was run by a Chinese-Japanese man who explained to us in Chinese each type of fish and the prices. There was also a cooking service upstairs, and he also suggested which fish should be cooked in which way. We bought puffer fish meat, glow-in-the-dark clams and a soft-shell lobster that day. The prices were reasonable. The only thing we were not satisfied with was that we were treated rudely by the waiter from the cooking shop when we arrived at the upstairs seating area. However, it was a problem with the waiter's personal attitude, as he was very rude to every customer.

I have been to Okinawa many times, but I have never been to the Makishi Market before. I came here for the first time to try it. All kinds of fresh seafood, pufferfish, and Ishigaki beef are all available in the Makishi Public Market. Chili oil and kelp sprouts are also super cheap here. It is a very interesting Japanese market experience. Makishi Market is clean, bright and fun to visit. I recommend you to come and take a look. There are also many places to buy souvenirs. You can buy some to bring back home. It is worth a visit.

Okinawa's kitchen. The first floor sells seafood, meat, pickles, seasonings and sundries. The general practice is to buy seafood on the first floor and then go to the second floor to ask the store to cook it. Sea chariots, giant clams, lobsters, luminous clams, coconut crabs, and prawns (tiger prawns?) can all be bought here. If you don’t have enough to eat, you can go to the second floor cafeteria and order Okinawan home-cooked dishes. There is a stall on the first floor that makes Okinawa tofu. It tastes chewy and soft, a bit like mochi, and is very delicious with light soy sauce! You can try it. Although it has a touristy feel, this is an important place to experience Okinawa culture! recommend!

Okinawa Attractions #3: Naminoue Shrine|Southern Okinawa

Naminoue Shrine is located in Naha City, perched on a coral reef cliff with views of the sea. As its name suggests, when the waves surge, it looks from afar as if it were sitting above the waves. Inside the shrine, Kumano Gongen, Hayatama-no-Okami, Ketsumiko-no-Okami and other deities are enshrined, making it one of the Eight Shrines of Ryukyu. Its red-tiled roof radiates Okinawa’s distinctive culture and is one of the must-visit sights when traveling to Naha.

It is a beautiful Japanese temple. When you walk to the temple, there is a lot of food and drinks to buy.

Naminoue Shrine is conveniently located in Naha City, and you can easily reach it even without renting a car. The amulets sold are also quite special, such as the bengata amulets made of traditional Okinawan dyed cloth, which are for praying for health; and the amulets shaped like Japanese elementary school bags, which are for praying for traffic safety. The characteristics of Naminoue Shrine are not only these, because Naminoue Shrine is built on a cliff, you can also see the ships coming and going in Naha Port and the sea view.

Naminoue Shrine is a small shrine with a beach nearby where you can relax and enjoy the sea breeze. It is not too far from Kokusai-dori, so if you don't have other activities in the city, taking a bus here is a good choice.

Naminoue Shrine is ranked first among the eight shrines in the Ryukyu Islands and is revered as the "number one shrine in the country". Whether you take a plane or a cruise, Naminoue Shrine is an easy-to-reach attraction. The school bag amulets sold by the shrine are a must-buy amulets when you come here. It takes about 20 minutes to walk from Naminoue Shrine to Kokusai-dori, so it is really convenient to come here.

Okinawa Attractions #4: Itoman Fish Market|Southern Okinawa

Itoman Fish Market is one of the three major fish markets in Okinawa, and because it sees fewer tourists, it’s more budget-friendly. From Naha Airport, it takes just 10-15 minutes to reach Itoman Fish Market, and many travelers who rent a car make it their first stop after landing in Okinawa.

Itoman Fish Market feels like a modern supermarket 🏪, with cool air conditioning ❄️ and bright lighting 💡, completely devoid of the clammy feel of a traditional fish market. Best of all, there's a large dining area 🪑 right outside, so you can easily open and eat your food! We ordered toro 🍣, sea urchin 🌟, squid 🦑, and fresh fish sashimi 🐠, and had the chef cut it for us 🔪. The moment we took a bite, the toro was deliciously oily and fragrant 😋, the squid was crisp and sweet 👌, and the sea urchin melted like butter. A simple dip in wasabi brought out the freshness of the ocean 🌊. (Warm reminder: fried and grilled items 🍤 and 🍢 are not freshly made and lose their flavor when they cool.) As for parking 🅿️, there's a spacious parking lot 🚗, so driving is a breeze.

Okinawa Attractions #5: Okinawa DFS Duty-Free Shop|Southern Okinawa

T Galleria Okinawa is a duty-free store operated by DFS. Inside, you’ll find a wide range of international luxury labels—think DIOR, GUCCI, CHANEL, and more. Basically, if it’s a big-name brand, you can probably find it here, which is why it’s become a must-visit shopping destination for many travelers. Even better, for some brands the prices, after the tax refund, are much lower than in Hong Kong—so it’s easy to go a little crazy and blow the budget! That said, even with so many labels, you might still find that certain brands aren’t available or don’t have a dedicated counter, so it’s a good idea to check online in advance to see whether the duty-free store carries the brand you’re after.

Okinawa Attractions #6: Gyokusendo Cave|Southern Okinawa

Gyokusendo Cave is Okinawa’s largest limestone cave, formed around 300,000 years ago. Stretching about 5 kilometers (around 3.1 miles) in total, it showcases spectacular clusters of stalactites and stalagmites—numbering as many as 900,000. The first 800 meters (about 0.5 miles) are open to the public, and the cave stays pleasantly cool at around 20°C (68°F), making a visit to Gyokusendo a refreshingly beautiful adventure.

Very worth seeing attractions, many photo spots, and the Japanese manage the attractions very positively, no odor, not too many unnatural and abrupt decorations! Breast holes are naturally mixed, so beautiful!

I came here specifically to see it, and Yuquan Cave didn't disappoint! 👍 The facilities throughout the cave, including the lighting and handrails on the walkways, were just right! Especially around the spring, the water was so clear that after taking photos, I realized it was indistinguishable from land! In some areas, small fans and simple lighting were installed underwater, making it easy to see the water flowing. 👍
review picture
5/5
The temperature outside was low due to the influence of a cold air mass, but as soon as I entered, I was greeted by humid air and warmth. As the lights changed, the cave scenery came into view, which was very beautiful. The large number of people was a minor drawback, reminding me of the very quiet Akiho Cave in Yamaguchi Prefecture that I visited before.

Tickets can be booked and used immediately, and are slightly cheaper than those purchased on-site, which is very convenient. It was the kids' first time seeing stalactites, and they found it novel and interesting, creating a wonderful memory. There were many interactive activities, but all required an additional fee. The staff were very helpful in taking photos, but we only found out later that we had to pay 3000 yen to pick them up. However, the image quality was good and worth remembering. The restaurant is located at the very end, and we only discovered it after exploring the entire area. Unfortunately, it was already closed in the afternoon, which was a minor drawback. You could easily spend a whole afternoon there! 👍

It was raining a bit when we came, so it was a little wet inside. Be careful when walking because there are quite a few steps. But overall, the cultural heritage is quite good. The whole tour takes about an hour!

Okinawa Attractions #7: Shuri Castle|Southern Okinawa

Shuri Castle, located in Naha on Okinawa Island, was once the capital and royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom. This was where the Ryukyu kings handled state affairs, received envoys, and hosted important ceremonies, and today it’s recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Throughout history, Shuri Castle was burned and rebuilt multiple times; the current structure is a reproduction modeled on the original remains left after World War II, showcasing Tang dynasty–style architecture. Unlike traditional Japanese castles, its exterior closely resembles the architectural style of China’s Minnan region. Look closely and you’ll notice that the dragons on the buildings appear as “mang” — four-clawed dragons ranked below the emperor’s five-clawed dragon — likely because the Ryukyu Kingdom was a Chinese tributary state at the time.

This Ryukyuan-style castle blends Chinese, Japanese, and Okinawan architectural features and has multiple gates. Not far from the entrance stands Shureimon, whose plaque bearing the words “Land of Propriety” was bestowed by the Chinese emperor when he invested the King of Ryukyu. Continuing through Kankaimon, Rokokumon, and Hoshinmon, you’ll reach the largest building inside the castle—the Main Hall (Seiden). The Main Hall’s North and South Halls were destroyed by a fire on October 31, 2019, and preparations for restoration are currently underway.

From October 26 to November 4 each year, the grand Shuri Castle Festival is held here. The event openly recruits performers from among local residents (including staff), and during the festival it reenacts scenes of visits by Chinese envoys in the Ryukyu Kingdom era. Participants dress in traditional Ryukyuan attire, lead more than 1,000 "court officials and palace ladies," and carry large palanquins to welcome China’s "investiture envoy."

Cape Manza is a sheer cliff famous for being a spectacular spot on Okinawa's main island. Its distinctive rock formations resemble an elephant's trunk, creating a beautiful contrast with the emerald green ocean. There is a promenade, so you can enjoy the spectacular view while taking a leisurely stroll. On sunny days, the color of the ocean is particularly striking, making it an excellent photo spot. In recent years, tourist facilities have been developed, and cafes and souvenir shops have also been built. This is a recommended spot where you can casually experience the natural beauty of Okinawa.

Manzamo actually looks like an elephant, lol It was a really strange rock shape But the scenery here is nice and there are a lot of people I think it would be a good place to go with your parents But it's far from the city, so I think it would be better to come by bus tour or by car!! lol

I bought a one-day pass, which included an attraction. The name of Manzamo comes from this vast grassland. You can sit on the grassland and enjoy a moment of leisure, and feel the endless blue sea and blue sky in front of you, but the weather was very cold that day! So I didn't sit on the grass either. There is also the famous Elephant Trunk Rock and Manzamo, where you can see the blue sea and sky and the vast lawn. It is the most representative and spectacular tourist attraction in Okinawa. It takes about 30 minutes to finish watching. Recommended reasons: Recommended for those who want to enjoy the beautiful sunset into the sea and fully experience the unique scenery of Okinawa, come and visit Cape Manza! After enjoying the scenery, you can also visit the specialty shops to see the specialties.

There is an entrance fee of 100 yen at the entrance. There is ample parking space in front and behind the entrance. I think 30 minutes is enough for the viewing time. It would be a bit too much to come here just to see this, but it would be better to visit other places like Churaumi Aquarium or Busena.

The Elephant Trunk Rock here is very famous. You can check in without marking the landmarks, but people will know you are in Okinawa As a result, when I checked in, someone said that the Elephant Trunk Rock was broken 😂 (Taiwan It is a place that will make you marvel at the wonders of nature. And because the whole ocean feels like a relaxing place There is a piano in front of the toilet in the souvenir shop for tourists to play. As expected, it is a free piano in the scenic area A button is broken 😂

Famous attractions and landmarks in Okinawa. You must not miss Kouri Island when you come to Okinawa. Driving across the Kouri Bridge is very shocking. I recommend everyone to drive here. The scenery is beautiful and the pace is slow, which is suitable for relaxation. The overall recommendation index is greater than five stars. Kouri Ocean Tower is also a must-see attraction for tourists. The distinctive tour bus and the bell on the top floor are perfect for taking photos.

Kouri Island (Japanese: 古宇利島/こうりじま Kōri-jima, Ryukyuan: 古宇利/フイ Hui) is an island located north of Yagajishima in the northern part of Okinawa Island, belonging to Nakijin Village. It is famous for its beautiful ocean views and the origin legend of the Ryukyuans (a man and a woman who were given to the world by the God of Creation, Amamiku, in return for help from the Emperor of Heaven). It has an area of 3.13 square kilometers[1], a circumference of 7.9 kilometers, and is almost circular in shape. It is a small raised coral reef island. Most people on the island are engaged in agriculture, while some are engaged in fishing and the service industry. The main agricultural products are sugarcane and red taro. Sea urchins are also very famous. It can be connected to Ugaji Island via the Kouri Bridge.

I took part in kkday's one-day trip to the north and came to Kouri Island. Although I didn't eat shrimp rice, I still had delicious banana cake. I looked at the long cross-sea bridge and heard that you can also see turtles. I walked on the beach and the whole beach was very clean. Although I didn't have an in-depth tour, I still came to the place and it can be regarded as a visit. I like this itinerary

I have been to this attraction many times in Okinawa, but I have never been there. This is my third time and I can finally come to Kouri Island. It is very convenient to drive by yourself. There are many parking spaces opposite the Kouri Tower. It is worth buying a ticket to go up and see the scenery. The top floor is also a check-in attraction. There is a very distinctive automatic golf cart to sit on. The children like it very much.

Nago Pineapple Park is a decades-old pineapple plantation. The red, acidic soil in northern Okinawa Island is especially well-suited for growing pineapples, so the fruit from this area has long been famous. Visitors can hop aboard a pineapple cart to tour the grounds, take in the many different pineapple varieties and the rarely seen pineapple flowers, and also watch how pineapple juice and other products are made.

This course is a walking course that takes place in under 2 hours, riding a dinosaur and pineapple unmanned electric vehicle. It's not too difficult. There's a nearby restaurant, Baeknyeon-goga Ufuya (Okinawa soba and shabu-shabu), so it's a good route. The addictive music is a kick. I recommend going with children.

🏖️What is there to do in Tokashiki🏖️ ✔️ Beach The most famous attraction on Tokashiki Island is #Aharen Beach, especially the view from the observation deck is breathtaking! But if you are obsessed with snorkeling and can see beautiful coral scenery, it is recommended to go to Zamami Island! ✔️ #CatIsland I've heard that Zamami Island is known as the Cat Island, but I think there are more cats on Tokashiki Island! There are a lot of cats wandering around the Apollen village on the island, about a dozen to twenty of them. They usually hang out near shops or gather outside restaurants during meal times. ✔️ Cute little creatures I spent 5 days on Tokashiki Island. I saw a tortoise shell flower on the roadside once, a goat standing on the edge of a cliff once, and a wild boar crossing the road once while driving at night. ⛴️Transportation: 70 minutes by ferry from Naha Tomari Port on Okinawa Island, and 30 minutes by high-speed boat.

It took 40 minutes to arrive. Take the 17:30 boat back Boat ticket 4810 yen + environmental tax 100 yen Rented a motorcycle 🏍️ I took beautiful photos that are worth more than the price ✨ There are basically no people on the island, and you can dive freely🤿 Whether you dive or not, you can see turtles if you are lucky🐢 Tokashiki Island, I love it so much! A clean and quiet island~🏝️ It takes 40 minutes by boat from Naha. I got sunburned again after swimming and snorkeling... This is my favorite island that I always visit when I go on a trip to Okinawa (^^) The popular beaches on Tokashiki Island are "Aharen Beach" and "Tokashiki Beach". Aharen Beach is also said to be the main beach of Tokashiki Island, and has beautiful coral reefs and many fishes. On the other hand, Tokashiki Beach is said to be a place where you can see sea turtles. I have been to both beaches, and I was very satisfied with seeing many fishes at Aharen Beach, but I was not able to see any sea turtles at Tokashiki Beach. So I personally recommend Aharen Beach. However, there are fewer people at Tokashiki Beach, so you can swim relatively freely and leisurely!! (And if you're lucky, you can see sea turtles!) I hope this information is helpful to you.

This is a remote island with beautiful sea, accessible in about 40 minutes by high-speed boat from Naha Port and Marine. The water is so clear and the beach is so beautiful that I ended up taking lots of photos of the sea! The island itself is large, so I wasn't sure how to get around the island, but I decided to relax and not rent a car. All the accommodations offered pick-up and drop-off services, and there was also a pick-up service for diving, so it wasn't a problem at all. There weren't many restaurants or places to go out, but I was able to see lots of sea turtles on the beach right behind the accommodation, and I was also able to dive in waters so clear that you could see the bottom of the ocean from the boat, so I was very satisfied. It's a small, laid-back island with only simple accommodations like guesthouses.

I thought it was just an ordinary observatory, but it turned out to be such a healing space... You can see Okinawa from different angles! The Okinawa City Hall Observatory is a quiet spot that I discovered unexpectedly. Take the elevator straight up to the high building, and your view will instantly broaden, with the entire Okinawa city and the mountains and sea in the distance in sight. <The first stop of the bus trip to travel around Okinawa from south to north - Nanjo City> "Nanjo City" is located in the southern part of Okinawa, and I chose to stay near "Nanjo City Office". In addition to the beautiful scenery, the main reason I chose this accommodation near "Nanjo City Hall" is "convenient transportation." The Nanjo City N Bus Lines A, B, C, and D all depart from Nanjo City Hall, making it very convenient to go to other tourist attractions in southern Okinawa, such as Gyokusen-do, Cape Chinen, Saiba Utaki, etc. So, I took the "Nanjo City Hall" as the center and stayed in a hotel nearby for two nights, thus starting my three-day and two-night trip to southern Okinawa.

The Okinawa City Hall Observatory is an observation deck located in the Okinawa City Hall, providing visitors with an excellent perspective overlooking the city of Okinawa and the surrounding landscape. The observatory is located on the upper floors of the building, and offers a clear view of Okinawa City, the port, and the surrounding seascape. Especially on clear days, the view is wide and you can even see other areas of Okinawa in the distance. In addition to the beautiful scenery during the day, the city lights at night also make this place very romantic. It is a great place to view the night view of Okinawa City. The observation deck is open to the public free of charge, allowing visitors to go up and enjoy the view at any time without paying any additional fees. This location is not as crowded as other popular Okinawa attractions, but it provides a relatively quiet and comfortable environment, perfect for tourists who want to enjoy a leisurely sightseeing.

The hotel is dated, however, it remain the charm of the past. The breakfast is very interesting, with Japanese, English and Chinese food available. We enjoyed our meals there. The location of the resort is out of the place. You need private transport to commute between places and the resort. Grand Mer means Great Sea, and we can see the sea from our balcony. The view is beautiful . There is an indoor heated swimming pool in the second floor. It is quite small for a swim but good to relax after a day travel.

1. The hotel adopts no reception, you must check in by yourself. If you have any questions, you can press the contact number on the tablet panel. You can talk to the service staff to help check in if you need to speak English or Japanese. The car is parked in the parking lot in front of the second floor for free. The parking lot is very large. We only have four cars when we check in, including our vehicles. If there is no self-driving, the traffic is a bit inconvenient. 2. The location is halfway up the mountain, there are many motels or daily rental suites nearby, I don’t know why I feel very empty, and I don’t feel very comfortable on safety concerns. 3. The room environment is the same as the photo. The room range is super large. The baby is very happy to run around, but it is also very happy to hit. The room lighting is dim, personally feel that the sight line is poor, the remote control is super insensitive, and it is difficult to switch or shut down. 4. During the stay, no one will remove the garbage, and you have to find a way by yourself or put it in the check-out. 5. Basic spare parts are available. The room is located at the highest point, so it is very convenient to open the window to watch the sunrise or sunset.

It was made like a renovation of an old love hotel. It's neither good nor bad. At night, you have to unlock the entrance and exit yourself, so you should tell me how to do it in advance. The disgusting point was that the walls were thin and I was worried about the sound of people walking in the aisle.

Located near eateries, mall and restaurants and value for money stay. The rooms were large and the staff spoke good English. The laundry and dryer were commercial size so fast and good. Allocated a room next to the smoking area so could smell the smoke even though we were in a non-smoking room. Appreciated the guest parking. The traditional breakfast was okay except for some overnight(?) rice that cause me to choke. Overall, met my expectations.

It is the best clean hotel I have ever seen. Although it is old, everything is good and free parking is available. Although the staff is an elderly person, they can use a good English answer, which is more beneficial than the translator at the front desk of a large hotel.

I LOVEEEE THE ROOM sooo sooo much! Self Check-in is very easy just have to make sure that we checked in in advance from email they send us before actually go check-in. Just have to put pin code / scan QR code. very easy. One drawback is that the wall is pretty thin. I stay on the highest floor but still can hear outside noises but not so loud still acceptable. The area is close to everything too. Great location, Great place

It looks a bit old, but it's relatively clean. Parking is free, and there are convenience stores and markets nearby. However, you need patience to use hot water. At first I thought it was a malfunction, but if I leave it on for about 3 minutes, hot water comes out.

Very clean and convenient Japanese style room with AC WiFi and shared bathroom. Quiet environment, however for light sleepers please know that there are no curtains for the window, only a small 障子.
