Huangpu River Cruise Guide: Which Pier, Ticket and Time to Choose 2026

A Huangpu River cruise is one of those things almost every visitor to Shanghai does at least once. You get the Bund on one side with its century old colonial buildings lit up, and Pudong on the other with the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower, and the whole futuristic skyline. It is worth doing. But if you book without checking which pier you need to go to, what kind of ticket you bought, or what time the cruise actually runs, it can turn into a mess fast.

Which Pier Does Your Huangpu River Cruise Leave From?

There are three main piers for Huangpu River cruises. Your ticket is tied to one specific pier and you cannot just show up at a different one. Check your booking before you leave your hotel.

Shiliupu Pier

• Location: Southern end of the Bund, Zhongshan South Road, Huangpu District
• Address for tickets: No. 481 Zhongshan East 2nd Road, or Pier 3 at No. 99 Waimai Road (check your voucher, both are Shiliupu but they are different counters)
• Route options: 45 to 60 minute classic tour, or 90 minute extended route past Nanpu and Yangpu bridges. The widest variety of any pier.
• How to get there: Metro Line 9 to Xiaonanmen Station, or Line 10 to Yuyuan Garden Station, then walk. Buses run along Zhongshan Road.
• Best for: Anyone who wants the most route options. If you want to compare a short cruise and a long one, Shiliupu gives you the most flexibility.

Jinling East Road Pier

• Location: Junction of East Jinling Road and East Zhongshan Road No. 2, middle section of the Bund
• Address for tickets: Ticket counter at the pier entrance on East Jinling Road
• Route options: 30 minute express cruises, and 60 minute standard routes covering the same central stretch between the Bund and Pudong as Shiliupu. More shorter and cheaper options here.
• How to get there: Walking distance from the middle of the Bund. Nearest metro is East Nanjing Road Station on Line 2 or Line 10, about a 10 minute walk.
• Best for: Families with young kids (stroller ramps, free boarding for children under 1.3 meters, easier facilities), or anyone who wants a quick 30 minute ride instead of a full hour.

Oriental Pearl Pier

• Location: Pudong side, right next to the Oriental Pearl Tower in Lujiazui
• Address for tickets: Ticket counter at the Oriental Pearl Cruise Terminal, near the tower
• Route options: 45 to 60 minute routes covering the same central river stretch as the Bund piers. The view is the same, the starting point is just different.
• How to get there: Metro Line 2 to Lujiazui Station, Exit 1 or 2, then walk toward the Oriental Pearl Tower. The pier is right next to it.
• Best for: Anyone staying in Pudong or spending the day around Lujiazui. Saves you from crossing back to the Bund side just to board.

Which Pier Should You Pick?

If you want the most options and do not mind walking a bit, Shiliupu. If you are with small kids or just want a quick 30 minute ride, Jinling East Road. If you are staying in Pudong, Oriental Pearl.

The three piers show the exact same skyline. The difference is convenience, cruise length, and how crowded the boarding area gets.

Day Cruise vs Night Cruise: Which Is Better?

Nearly everyone will tell you to take the night cruise. They are right, but there is more to it.

• Night cruise (most popular): The Bund and Pudong are fully lit starting around sunset. The best window is roughly 7 PM to 9 PM, when everything is illuminated and the city looks the way it does in all the photos. Some landmark lighting starts shutting off after 9 PM or 10 PM, so a 7:30 PM or 8 PM departure is ideal. Night cruises are also the most crowded and the most expensive. Expect longer lines at security and more people on the deck.
• Sunset cruise (the sweet spot): Cruises departing around 5 PM to 7 PM let you see the city in daylight, then watch the lights come on as the sky darkens. You get both versions in one trip. Less crowded than the peak night slots, and the photos come out better because the sky still has some color.
• Day cruise: Cheaper, less crowded, and better for seeing architectural details that get lost in the dark. If you care more about looking at the buildings themselves than the neon spectacle, a daytime cruise might actually suit you better. Also a good option if you are traveling with young kids and want to avoid the late night chaos.
• Weather matters more than time of day. Avoid rainy days. Rain brings fog and low clouds that block the views, and the open deck gets wet and cold. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) have the best weather for a cruise. Summer is hot and humid but the sky is often clearer in the evening. Winter is cold and windy on the deck but the sky is the clearest and crowds are the thinnest.

How Long Should Your Huangpu River Cruise Be?

Cruises come in three rough lengths, and each one gives you a different experience.

• 30 minutes (express): Good if you just want to see the skyline and get off. Usually departs from Jinling East Road Pier. Covers a short segment of the river, you will see the main buildings, and then you are done. Cheapest option.
• 45 to 60 minutes (classic): What most people book. Departs from all three piers. You cruise along the central stretch of the Huangpu, passing the Bund, the Pudong skyline, the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower, and usually turning around near Nanpu Bridge or Waibaidu Bridge before coming back. Enough time to take photos, walk around the deck, and feel like you actually did something.
• 90 minutes or more (extended): Longer routes that go further along the river, past the Yangpu Bridge or all the way to the Wusongkou estuary. These are often dinner cruises with a meal included. More expensive, more leisurely, and you see more of the river. Worth it if you want a full evening out rather than just a quick sightseeing lap.

For most people, the 45 to 60 minute cruise is the right call. You see everything without it dragging on. The 30 minute version feels rushed. The 90 minute version is nice but you will be looking at the same skyline for the extra time.

Standard Deck vs VIP Deck: What Do You Actually Get?

Every cruise boat has multiple decks, and your ticket determines where you can stand.

• Standard deck: You get access to the open air upper deck along with everyone else. The view is the same as VIP, the buildings look identical from the railing. The problem is space. During peak night departures, the railing spots fill up fast and you might be standing behind people. Standard tickets are first come first served for the best standing positions. There is usually an indoor cabin area too if you want to sit down.
• VIP deck: A separate area, usually on the highest deck or at the front, with fewer people and guaranteed railing access. Some VIP packages include a free drink, tea and snacks, or a small gift. You get a bit more personal space and do not need to jostle for a good photo spot. The price bump is usually modest, maybe 30 to 50 RMB more.
• Dinner cruise: A separate category. These are 90 minute or longer cruises with a buffet or set menu included. The food is fine, not the reason you booked, but the experience of eating while the Bund slides past the window is what you are paying for. Some dinner cruises have private tables by the window. If you want the dinner experience, book a dinner specific ticket rather than expecting to buy food on a standard cruise.

For most people, the standard deck is enough. You see the same skyline. But if you are going during peak hours on a weekend or holiday, the VIP deck is worth the small extra cost just for the guaranteed space.

How to Collect Your Ticket and Board

The process at the pier is straightforward but there are a few things that trip people up.

• Booking online: Book through Trip.com or another platform and you will get a voucher or confirmation code. This is not your ticket. You need to exchange it at the pier for a physical boarding pass.
• Ticket collection: Go to the ticket window at your pier. You need your passport (original, not a copy) and the booking confirmation or voucher code. Day cruise collection windows are usually open from about 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Night cruise collection runs from about 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Times vary by pier and season, so check your voucher for the exact redemption hours.

If you booked multiple tickets in one order, everyone should collect together or you need to coordinate at the window.

• Security screening: After getting your ticket, you go through a basic security check. Bag scan, walk through, similar to a metro station. The line for security can be 20 to 60 minutes during peak evening hours, especially on weekends and holidays. Pre booking skips the ticket buying line but does not skip security.
• Boarding: After security, you wait in the boarding area until your cruise is called. Boarding is queued, first come first served. Once on board, head to the deck your ticket allows. Standard ticket holders go to the open deck or indoor cabin. VIP ticket holders follow signs to the VIP section.
• Arrive early. The standard advice is 30 to 60 minutes before departure. During peak evening hours on weekends, aim for 60 minutes. You will spend some of that time in line, some of it waiting, but you will not be running to the gate.

Huangpu River Cruise Prices

Prices vary by pier, time of day, deck type, and season. Here are the rough numbers.

• Standard sightseeing ticket: 120 to 150 RMB (about $16 to $22 USD)
• VIP deck upgrade: Usually 30 to 50 RMB extra on top of the standard ticket
• 30 minute express: Cheaper, often around 80 to 100 RMB
• Dinner cruise: 250 to 400+ RMB depending on the menu and cruise length

Night cruises are usually the same price as day cruises or slightly higher. Some piers charge a premium for the 7 PM to 9 PM slot because demand is highest.

Children: Kids under 1.3 meters are usually free but need a boarding pass from the ticket counter. One free child per adult. Children between 1.3 and 1.5 meters get half price tickets bought at the pier. For dinner cruises, the child might board free but their meal costs extra, usually around 100 to 150 RMB.

Tips for a Better Huangpu River Cruise

• Book online before you go. The ticket windows at the pier sell walk up tickets, but during peak hours they sell out or the line takes forever. Pre booking also means you can choose your time slot instead of taking whatever is left.
• Check your pier on the voucher. The number one mistake is showing up at Shiliupu when your ticket says Jinling East Road, or the other way around. They are not interchangeable and a taxi between them takes 15 to 20 minutes in Bund traffic.
• Bring your passport. You cannot collect your ticket without it. A photo on your phone will not work. Original passport only.
• Get to the upper deck early. If you have a standard ticket, board as soon as they let you and go straight to the upper deck railing. The best spots fill up in the first few minutes. If you board late, you will be standing behind people.
• Bring a jacket, even in summer. The wind on the river at night is colder than you expect. In winter, the open deck is freezing. Dress for colder weather than what it feels like on the street.
• Aim for the left side of the boat. Most of the iconic Bund views are on the Puxi side, which means the left side of the boat as you head north from Shiliupu. On the way back, the Pudong skyline is on the left. You will see everything regardless, but the left railing gets the better angle for photos of the Bund buildings.
• Skip the cruise if it is raining or foggy. Visibility matters more than anything else. Low clouds and rain kill the view completely. Check the weather forecast and book for a clear evening if you can. If you are only in Shanghai for two days and it rains both days, take the cruise anyway, but lower your expectations on the photos.
