Dress Code for Shanghai Bar & Club

Shanghai Bar & Club Dress Code

Dress codes vary by venue, but these guidelines simplify packing.

Upscale Clubs & Rooftops (MASTER, AKOMA, KEV)

Smart casual is required—think button-down shirts, dresses, tailored pants, and leather shoes. Avoid sportswear, flip-flops, sneakers (unless designer), hoodies, or casual tees, as rules are stricter on weekends, especially for VIP areas.

Speakeasies & Intimate Bars (Speak Low, Sober Company)

Neat casual or smart casual works—jeans with a blouse, polo shirts, or loafers. There are no strict bans, but avoid messy attire (dirty sneakers, wrinkled loungewear) to fit the ambiance.

Themed & Industrial Bars (THE BUNKER, NICE)

Casual-chic is fine—dark jeans, graphic tees, boots, or jackets. Restrictions are minimal; just skip swimwear or sleepwear, and embrace edgier styles for industrial-themed spots.

Retro & Jazz Bars (Peace Hotel Jazz Bar)

Classic smart casual aligns with the old-world glamour—dresses, men’s suits, or vintage-inspired outfits. Avoid shorts or flip-flops to match the timeless vibe.

Is Shanghai Safe to Go Out at Night?

Yes, Shanghai is generally very safe for nighttime outings—even for foreigners traveling alone.

  • Most nightlife hubs (The Bund, Xintiandi, Jing’an) are well-lit, crowded, and patrolled by security or police.
  • Street crime is rare, and public transport (subways, taxis, ride-hailing apps like Didi) runs late (subways until ~11:30 PM, taxis 24/7) for easy travel back to accommodations.
  • Locals and staff are usually helpful if you need directions or assistance—English is widely spoken in tourist/nightlife areas.
  • Tip: Stick to busy, well-known areas (avoid isolated back alleys) and keep valuables secure, as you would in any major city.

The Radisson Blu New World in Shanghai was truly a memorable stay, perfectly located in the heart of the city near People’s Square and the vibrant Nanjing Road area, which made exploring incredibly convenient. The hotel itself feels grand yet welcoming, with spacious rooms, comfortable amenities, and stunning views over the Shanghai skyline that instantly set the tone for a special visit. One of the absolute highlights was visiting the iconic revolving restaurant, Epicure on 45. Dining there felt like an experience rather than just a meal — as the restaurant slowly rotated, we were treated to breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the city, watching Shanghai unfold from every angle. The atmosphere was elegant yet relaxed, and it created such a unique moment to enjoy both the cuisine and the scenery at the same time. Watching the city lights come alive during the evening was unforgettable, especially while enjoying the revolving view high above the skyline. Seeing the Shanghai light show from this vantage point added a magical touch — the illuminated buildings and vibrant energy of the city made the experience feel truly special and almost cinematic. Overall, the Radisson Blu New World offers a fantastic combination of location, comfort, and unique experiences. From attentive service to the unforgettable revolving restaurant and spectacular night views, it’s a hotel that turns a stay in Shanghai into something memorable and unique. I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting a central location with a touch of luxury and one-of-a-kind views.

The JW Marriott Marquis at People's Square is a no-brainer, absolutely no regrets! It's right by the subway, so getting around is super easy. The location is superb and incredibly convenient. The service is warm and friendly, and the staff's attitude is excellent. It's a vintage hotel with a touch of Shanghainese charm. They were incredibly responsive to all my needs; whether it was the cleaning staff on my floor or the service staff in the executive lounge, everyone provided immense help during my stay! I highly recommend this old-school hotel. While the facilities are a bit dated, they are very well-maintained. It's also worth noting that some floors are undergoing renovation, so you might want to inquire about that before checking in. Oh, and you absolutely must try the breakfast; it's really delicious, especially the scallion pancake with egg!

My experience in the king room at Pullman Shanghai Jing'an was absolutely amazing, and the front desk service was top-notch! As soon as I arrived, the front desk staff greeted me with a warm smile, handled the check-in efficiently and quickly, and even thoughtfully introduced the hotel's facilities and local transportation. They answered all my questions professionally, instantly relieving any travel fatigue. The room itself was a good size with fantastic panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows offering superb city views. The cleanliness was impeccable, paying attention to every detail, making for an excellent overall experience. Throughout my stay, I truly felt the hotel's professionalism and attentiveness. The efficient front desk service combined with the ultimate comfort of the king room makes it perfect for both business trips and leisure getaways. This was my first trip to Shanghai with my girlfriend, and after considering many options, we finally chose Conrad Shanghai. The experience was quite good. Even with so many guest rooms, the hotel still managed to escort guests to the elevators. The service attitude was good, though there is still room for improvement—inevitable chaos due to the high occupancy and some cleanliness lapses caused by understaffing were noticeable. Still, considering the price and its unbeatable location in the World Trade Center, it is highly recommended.

Jing'an District/West Nanjing Road Shanghai|0.85km from city center
The hotel’s location is very good. It is about a 5-minute walk to a huge Starbucks, Nanjing West Road, the MRT station, and Wujiang Road, which has several nice bakeries and food options. This made getting around very convenient. There was also a 7-11 just across the road. However, the Premier Two-Bedroom Suite was disappointing for the price paid. The rooms are rather small, especially the master bedroom, where there was not enough space to place or open any luggage. We had to keep our luggage in the living room instead. The bathroom, particularly the shower area, looked very dated. The tiles appeared old and there was a musty smell, which was unpleasant. Another inconvenience was that the light switches were only on one side of the bed, making it very inconvenient to switch off the lights from the other side. The kitchenette was also very small. Cutlery was stored in a drawer above the bin, which was not ideal, and there were no extra plates provided. The tiles looked old with visible cracks, and some of the drawers were faulty. Overall, the room did not feel premium and felt overpriced for what was offered. The hotel rooms clearly need a glow-up to match the Kempinski brand and the rates charged. Additionally, the reception area was undergoing renovation, with no seating or waiting area. The pick-up and drop-off driveway is very narrow, only a small lane. When loading our luggage, we had to do so very quickly as other cars were waiting. The driveway would benefit from being more spacious. While the location is excellent, the room condition, layout, and facilities did not meet expectations for a Premier suite.

We booked a family room and were later upgraded to a family balcony room with a view of Yu Garden. The night views of the Yu Garden lantern festival absolutely captivated us, so we went to see it and it was truly magnificent. The location is super convenient, close to Yu Garden station, making it easy to get to Nanjing Road, Grand Gateway, or explore Pudong. The hotel staff were very enthusiastic. Even during Chinese New Year when they were understaffed and fully booked, they actively helped us with our last-minute room change request. The hotel also organized daily entertainment activities, and we got to experience a shadow puppet show.

During our stay, we did not identify any significant shortcomings in the hotel. Its prime location, where it is easily accessible on foot to the Bund, was a notable feature. The room conditions were excellent, with thorough cleaning and hygiene measures in place, and the facilities functioned properly. The hotel’s amenities, such as the laundry facilities, added practical value and were more than just marketing gimmicks. The staff at the front desk, Xiao Qin and Xiao Wu, demonstrated professionalism and were able to efficiently address guests’ needs. Overall, considering the balance of cost and quality, this hotel is a safe and reliable choice, with strong performance across all aspects.

The Westin Bund Center Shanghai - An Unforgettable Stay During my recent trip to Shanghai, I chose The Westin Bund Center Shanghai as my accommodation, and the experience far exceeded my expectations, compelling me to write this positive review. Check-in Experience: Upon entering the hotel, I was immediately drawn to its luxurious yet welcoming ambiance. The front desk staff were warm and professional, promptly handled my check-in, and thoroughly answered all my questions regarding the hotel's facilities. The room's decor was elegant and well-arranged, providing a perfect space for relaxation. Room Facilities: My room was spacious and bright, with a comfortable bed that ensured a peaceful night's sleep after a busy day. The room was fully equipped with all necessities, including high-speed Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, and a mini-fridge, meeting all my needs. Of particular note was the modern bathroom design, which offered high-quality toiletries, making my showers very relaxing. Special Surprise: During my stay, the hotel also prepared a special surprise for me – an anniversary room setup. The bed was covered with rose petals, heart-shaped balloons and a cute little bear adorned the headboard, accompanied by a bottle of red wine and a plate of exquisite desserts. This thoughtful and considerate gesture deeply moved me and made this stay even more memorable. Dining Experience: The hotel's restaurant offered a rich selection of breakfast options, from Chinese to Western, all fresh and delicious. I especially recommend their fruit basket and homemade cakes; they were not only visually appealing but also tasted superb. Summary: The Westin Bund Center Shanghai not only provided a first-class accommodation experience but also made me feel the warmth of home through its meticulous service and surprising room setup. Big shout out to the housekeeping staff! The coffee machine was broken, and two of them actively helped me sort it out. Now, for the breakfast department, I have a big complaint! 😡 Because I had an early train to catch the next day, I specifically ordered a takeaway breakfast the night before. But when I got to the station, bumpy ride and all, I opened the breakfast bag and was speechless. Inside was a bruised pear, a cup of black coffee, and three identical, dry croissants! Even McDonald's knows to pack sugar and milk with coffee – do you five-star hotels not? With so many Western and Chinese options for breakfast, I only get three stale croissants? No fresh fruit? Guests are expected to eat fruit that's almost rotten?! I've stayed at many five-star hotels, and this packed breakfast quality is even worse than a Hampton Inn! 😤😠🤬

Stayed here on New Year's Eve. The hotel has been renovated, and the rooms are spacious and very clean. The executive room offers great value for money, with afternoon tea and happy hour included. Because it was New Year's Eve, happy hour was held in the Western restaurant, and the food selection was excellent. This hotel is located by the Suzhou River, offering a tranquil escape. It's right next to the Suzhou River half-marathon route, which is where I often take my kids cycling. Since I stayed during Chinese New Year, the hotel was bustling and lively. My husband and I had planned to join the Baduanjin (a form of Qigong) class, but it was so crowded that we gave up halfway through. If it were less busy on a normal day, it would probably be a wonderful place to relax. I noticed something interesting during breakfast: the young lady who gave me a spa massage last night was making coffee this morning! The hotel's design is thoughtful in every detail, and the staff are all very charming. They proactively offered us a complimentary one-hour late checkout, which was a nice touch! Personally, I wasn't particularly interested in the various health teas and soups provided in the room, but I have to admit, this kind of wellness-focused amenity would appeal to many people. The hot spring facilities were also quite clean. Overall, the hotel maintains a high standard of hygiene. As for dining, the executive lounge was quite ordinary, especially in the afternoon. Next time, I plan to try the Spanish restaurant located within the hot springs area.

The room itself has floor heating and is clean and comfortable. The natural hot spring water at Gokusho is very clean, and the scrub lady gave a fantastic service. I especially loved the food at the restaurant – delicious, high-quality ingredients, and generous portions; it felt like being in Northeast China. Because of the Disney early entry pass, I didn't have time for breakfast, but the front desk packed some simple food for me to take on the go. From now on, whenever I come to Disney on a weekend, I'll only stay here.

The transportation is very convenient, and the environment is relatively quiet. It seems there's also an attached restaurant? Upon arrival, the front desk lady thoughtfully explained the check-in details. Because we noted that we wanted to celebrate Valentine's Day early, they upgraded us for free to a duplex room type that was basically double the price! Highly recommend for couples looking for a hot spring getaway or families traveling together. For breakfast, you can choose between Western or Japanese style, catering to all preferences. There's also a cute cow cat in the lobby; I heard it's been a stray cat they've been feeding for several years [heart emoji].

The hotel room facilities are good, with everything that should be there. The smoking area outside is also very beautiful. The breakfast in the morning is very good, it is self-service, and there are freshly made noodles to eat. If you are thirsty, you can go downstairs at any time to have some drinks and fruits, which are all included in the hotel package. Why the deduction? Like many reviews wrote, the water in the pool here is really too hot. It is the hottest of all the hot springs in Shanghai that I have been to. It feels too hot. I saw that several children could hardly soak in the water for a while. I don’t know why so many people complained. I saw that the management was still saying in the comments that it met the hot spring temperature requirements. What they said is that your water is too hot, and they are giving you suggestions. Everyone in the hot spring said that the water was hot, not that you violated any regulations... It takes talent to reply like this

Stayed here with some friends for a staycation. I stayed in the majiang room while my friends stayed in the regular room. Regular rooms were much cleaner and more comfortable, whereas the majiang room was a little dusty, had a lingering smell, and did not have a hairdryer. The Japanese style flooring and furnishings in the regular rooms were very cosy and atmospheric, but in the majiang room, the large ceiling space made it feel a bit bleak, the furniture was mismatched, and the decor nonexistent, it felt a bit like I was in a divorced uncle's garage. Majiang table and underfloor heating worked well, however, and we still had a pleasant stay. Location, right by Chuansha old town, was perfect for a staycation, with all the charm of a small town but the convenience of still being in Shanghai. I found the hotspring to be clean and pleasant, but a little underwhelming. Only two small pools, both at 37°c, would have preferred to have a hotter option and other facilities such as salt scrub or sauna. It was still nice enough, just not a highlight of the stay. Overall it was a comfortable stay. The facilities are very basic, but fine. It was a nice escape from the bustle of central Shanghai.

Overall Experience: My stay was defined by a feeling of tranquil escape. The hotel's greatest strength is its atmosphere. Being in a historic building tucked away in a quiet, leafy neighborhood just off the famous Nanjing Road created a perfect balance. I could easily walk to the buzz and shopping, but returned each time to a serene, garden-filled sanctuary. It felt more like a peaceful retreat than a standard city hotel. Service: The service was consistently attentive and polite. Staff were professional and quick to help with requests. The check-in and check-out process was smooth. While the service wasn't overly familiar, it was reliably good and matched the hotel's calm, understated style. I felt well taken care of. Facilities: The facilities are well curated but compact, focusing on quality over quantity.

Jing'an District/West Nanjing Road Shanghai|2.12km from city center
The location gets a 99/100! This place is a major hub, super convenient for getting anywhere, surrounded by large shopping malls. Jing'an Temple, the Park Hotel, Wukang Road Historical and Cultural Zone, Anfu Road, and Huaihai Middle Road are all basically within a half-hour's journey, which is perfect for aimless wanderers like me~ If you're coming by subway, take Exit 6 at Jing'an Temple station; it's the closest way to walk. Room: The facilities are definitely old and small. The hairdryer is an old-fashioned one from the last century that you have to hold down the button to use, so I didn't wash my hair that night. The basic room type is only 38 square meters, and the luggage rack needs to be pulled out, otherwise, even a 20-inch suitcase can't be opened flat. Despite being old, it's very well maintained and clean, with no visible stains. Service: Top marks! Every staff member was genuinely friendly, proactively helping with luggage, guiding check-in, greeting guests, and holding doors open when leaving. The details of an old-school hotel are evident everywhere. Breakfast: The freshly made waffles and pancakes with cream are absolutely delicious; the cream is perfectly light. The xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) are also worth trying. Surroundings: The hotel is connected to Shanghai Centre, so there are restaurants, cafes, and a small supermarket right outside. It's a bit like the expat supermarkets in Beijing's embassy district, with a lot of imported foods, which makes sense given the large number of foreigners in the area.

Every time I travel for business, Citadines Apart'hotel is always my top choice. The front desk staff are incredibly warm and attentive, providing thoughtful guidance throughout my stay, which makes me feel really cared for. The room they arrange for me is always clean, tidy, and well-equipped, perfectly meeting my business travel needs. The breakfast offers a wide variety of choices and a balanced nutritional spread, truly energizing me for the day's work. After a busy day, I can also head to the hotel's gym for a run and some exercise to relax and unwind. First time staying at Grand Hyatt Jin Mao and I'm already a fan! It's perfectly located in the heart of Lujiazui, making transportation a breeze with no detours needed. The room was immaculately clean and well-organized, with all amenities provided. The views are expansive and unobstructed, offering a panoramic city skyline. Both the front desk and room service were excellent – friendly without being overbearing, which made me feel completely relaxed and at ease. It happened to be Chinese New Year, and while we were queuing to check in due to the crowd, the manager even gave my child a little 'Milk Dragon' toy as a gift – it was incredibly thoughtful! Even more delightful, we received a New Year's gift on the afternoon of our check-in. The cleaning staff on the 83rd floor were also so kind and had such a warm, comforting smile that even my four-year-old son said he wants to stay at this hotel again when we come to Shanghai next time! 🏨

This hotel is located in the heart of Jing'an Temple commercial district, with a subway station conveniently nearby, making transportation excellent. The room's cleanliness was average, but the various facilities inside were well-maintained and all functioned properly. All staff members were professional and enthusiastic. Due to its age, the only drawback was that showering could only be done in the bathtub, which felt a bit unsafe. Also, there's no elevator from the parking garage to the first floor, so you have to use the stairs, which isn't ideal for the elderly or disabled. The lobby of this old-school five-star hotel is still quite grand, and parking is free.

The location is super convenient, especially for shopping. It's right next to Taikoo Hui, and you can easily walk to Zhangyuan and Plaza 66. When checking in, the front desk proactively asked about my floor and room preferences. The welcome fruit was also thoughtfully prepared. Upon departure, they also offered services like luggage storage. The concierge department took the initiative to help with my heavy luggage. The breakfast variety was quite rich too. The Bund Area Shanghai|2.48km from city center
The hotel's overall ambiance is comfortable, grand, and luxurious, with meticulous and warm service (upon entering, you're greeted with smiles and warm welcomes from every staff member). This Chinese New Year, my family and I returned to the Hyatt on the Bund (this is our second stay since the renovation). The renovated rooms are even more comfortable, and the cleanliness is impeccable. They've also added a table and chairs, a sofa, and a mini-fridge, giving it a home-away-from-home feeling. Furthermore, this year the hotel hosted a New Year's Eve dinner in the lobby, which created a wonderfully festive atmosphere. Though strangers, everyone, young and old, felt the hotel's warm and enthusiastic service – truly a vibrant start to the New Year! What's more, the hotel changed the breakfast location and style. While this undoubtedly increased the hotel's workload, it significantly reduced waiting times for guests (on the second morning of the New Year, they even added temporary waiting areas in the hallway with drinks and small snacks). These small details reflect the management's thoughtful approach: continuously improving based on guest needs, always putting guests first, and excelling in every aspect of service to meet their requirements. This is why I've consistently chosen this hotel for many years (both before and after the renovation).

This has been my go-to hotel every time I visit Shanghai in recent years. The front desk lady was very enthusiastic, and the gentleman was super efficient. The floor-to-ceiling windows offer a great view. Breakfast was just okay, nothing special, but the price is really high. In that regard, it doesn't quite measure up to the Shangri-La in Chengdu. My favorite part of the room's decor was the bathroom, it's gorgeous. The only minor complaint is that the toilet isn't smart. The room decor is decent, but the duvet was too thin. The air conditioning consumes a lot of electricity but doesn't heat up, so it was basically useless. I caught a cold on the first night and woke up with a really hoarse voice the next morning. Even with a heater and an extra blanket the second night, it didn't help much, and I ended up being sick for a whole week. Despite that, I'd still stay here again when I'm in Shanghai. The area is great for shopping and dining. One more thing to complain about: I'm not sure why the bottled water was replaced with boxed water, and without a straw. Having to drink directly from the carton is just bizarre!

The Shanghai SK Hotel is a long-standing luxury hotel located in Lujiazui. Its location is excellent, within walking distance of the Huangpu River and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. The river view rooms offer superb views, with dazzling lights and a charming cityscape at night. The rooms are spacious and clean, and I particularly liked the bathroom layout. However, there's room for improvement regarding the check-in speed. Overall, the experience exceeded my expectations and I would definitely recommend it.

We had a family trip during the holidays. Even though the hotel is a bit older, the overall service was excellent, and it had a wonderful Chinese New Year festive atmosphere. Our butler, Teresa, was incredibly attentive and enthusiastic, thinking of everything. She made sure to remind us about all the activities scheduled throughout the holiday. She also helped us get a room upgrade and provided complimentary snacks and fruit. The evening light show was fantastic, enjoyed by both kids and adults. When we checked out, Teresa thoughtfully prepared a small gift for the children, which we greatly appreciated!

This is our re-visit of the hotel. I don’t know why, but it just felt homey instantly (usually it will take me a night to get used to the room), it’s just comfortable with peaceful ambiance and soft lighting. The breakfast was amazing and it really helped to start our day in a pleasant way! We also had a pleasant interaction with the room-service robot who delivered bottle water to our room twice 😄 You just had to try it!!! too bad I couldn’t hug the robot 😄 I also like the Hotel’s good and combined use of technology and human service. I called from the room to ask for bottle water, and it was answered by a lady who said they will send a Robot to deliver. (In another hotel, I also made a call from the room with a small request, but it was an auto answer where you had to talk to a machine and dial the numbers when prompted, which often ended in frustration). Other than that, just one suggestion, I thought the quality of the toiletries and slippers provided could be better compared to the peer hotels, yea, especially for the slippers, they felt too synthetic compared to the slippers from the other two hotels I stayed at during this travel. Overall, great stay, pleasant experience and will revisit!

I stayed here for one night. I came here after leaving another hotel that wasn't good. I'm so glad that I came here instead. I really got such a good night's sleep. One of the hotel staff, Ekko, was extra helpful in answering my questions in English, allowing me to stay longer in the lobby while I waited for my friend and even offered me a bottle of water. He was very welcoming! The the bed is so comfortable and soft and the hotel is very clean. And the breakfast is also delicious. You also have a vending machine on the first floor that takes digital payment and a mini refrigerator in your room. There's also a smart TV with HDMI and screen mirroring. It's great value for money and it's also just a really comfortable place to stay. The interior design is really beautiful and eclectic. I think you'll have fun just hanging out in the lobby, good music playing, for a couple hours doing some work at one of the many sitting areas in the lobby, if you're a digital nomad like me. Really nice vibe!
