A Biometric Passport (also known as an e-Passport or digital passport) looks like a traditional paper passport but contains an embedded electronic microprocessor chip.

This chip stores your personal biological information, such as your digital photo, fingerprints, and sometimes iris scans. By linking your physical characteristics to the document, it becomes nearly impossible for someone else to use your identity.

How Does a Biometric Passport Work?

When you arrive at a border, the passport reader communicates with the chip inside your document using RFID technology.

1. Scanning: The reader pulls your digital photo and fingerprints from the chip.
2. Comparison: A camera at the border gate takes a live photo of your face.
3. Verification: The system uses facial recognition algorithms to compare the "live" you with the "digital" you stored on the chip. If they match, the gate opens automatically.

How to Identify If Your Passport is Biometric

You don't need to tear your passport apart to find the chip! Identification is simple:

• The Gold Symbol: Look at the bottom of your front cover. If you see a small, gold-colored icon that looks like a rectangle with a circle in the middle, you have a biometric passport.
• The Feel: The "data page" (the one with your photo) is usually thicker and stiffer than the other pages because it houses the antenna and chip.
• Issue Date: Most countries transitioned to e-Passports after 2010. If yours was issued recently, it’s almost certainly biometric.
