Korean Air Carry-On Baggage Allowance

baggage for Korean Air

Korean Air applies unified carry-on baggage rules for all domestic and international flights, with tiered quantity and weight limits based on cabin class. All cabin baggage must fit in the overhead bin or under the front seat. Passengers may also bring small personal essentials like coats, umbrellas and duty-free bags free of extra charges.

The airline distinguishes strictly between standard cabin bags and personal items with separate size and weight quotas. Personal items are small in-flight essentials, while standard cabin bags are larger items stowed in overhead bins, ensuring cabin safety and space efficiency.

Carry-On Size and Weight Limits by Cabin Class

All size measurements include handles, wheels, and external pockets, with no exceptions for soft-sided luggage. Overhead bins on all Korean Air aircraft follow a uniform maximum compatible dimension of 115cm total linear size for standard cabin bags.

  • Economy & Premium Class: 1 standard cabin bag + 1 personal item, combined total weight maximum 10kg. Standard bag size limit: 55cm × 40cm × 20cm (115cm total linear dimension). Personal item size limit: 40cm × 30cm × 15cm.
  • Prestige (Business) & First Class: 2 standard cabin bags, combined total weight maximum 18kg. Each standard bag adheres to the same 115cm total linear dimension limit. No extra personal item quota is required as the dual-bag allowance covers all in-cabin luggage need.

Is Korean Air Strict About Carry-On Baggage?

korean air baggage allowance chart

Korean Air strictly enforces carry-on rules via two key checks: check-in counters verify luggage weight, size and quantity, while boarding gates conduct random spot checks (especially on busy and full flights). Non-compliant items will be forcibly checked in and subject to excess fees.

Quick tips: Weigh luggage in advance, use size-compliant bags, avoid overstuffing, and consolidate items to meet regulations.

Is a Backpack Considered a Personal Item on Korean Air?

Backpacks count as personal items only if sized 40cm × 30cm × 15cm or smaller and fit under the seat. Small laptop and daily backpacks meet this standard.

Oversized backpacks are classified as standard cabin bags. Economy passengers carrying both a regular cabin bag and a large backpack will exceed the quota, requiring check-in or excess fees. Classification depends solely on size, not bag type.

Korean Air Checked Baggage Allowance

a stack of luggages to be take off on Korean Air

Korean Air operates two distinct checked baggage calculation systems globally: a piece-based system for all international routes (excluding US/Brazil routes) and a weight-based system for domestic South Korean flights. Rules differ drastically between route types in terms of permitted bag quantities, single-piece weight caps, and total dimension limits. All checked baggage must adhere to airline safety standards for cargo hold storage and transportation.

Free Checked Baggage Allowance for International Flights

International flights (excluding United States and Brazil routes) use a piece-based allowance structure with fixed single-piece weight and size limits for all cabin classes. Each checked bag must not exceed 158cm in total linear dimensions (length + width + height).

  • Economy & Premium Class: 1 free checked piece, maximum 23kg per bag
  • Prestige (Business) Class: 2 free checked pieces, maximum 32kg per bag
  • First Class: 3 free checked pieces, maximum 32kg per bag

Infant passengers on international routes receive 1 free 10kg checked bag (≤115cm total dimension), plus complimentary carriage of 1 foldable stroller and 1 car seat or travel bassinet.

Korean Air Economy Class Baggage Allowance

Economy class has fixed baggage rules for all routes. On international flights (excluding US/Brazil), passengers get 1 carry-on bag + 1 personal item (10kg total) and 1 checked bag (max 23kg, 158cm). On South Korean domestic flights, economy has a 20kg total checked baggage weight limit with no piece limit, while carry-on rules stay the same.

Discounted basic economy fares may have no or limited free checked baggage. Standard and premium economy fares include the full standard baggage allowance.

Korean Air Domestic Flight Baggage Allowance

All domestic flights operating within South Korea apply a weight-based free checked baggage system, differing entirely from the international piece-based structure. There is no limit on the number of checked bags, only a total weight cap per cabin class.

  • Economy Class: 20kg total free checked baggage weight
  • Prestige (Business) Class: 30kg total free checked baggage weight
  • First Class: 40kg total free checked baggage weight

Domestic cabin carry-on policies mirror international rules in weight, quantity, and size limits. Infant passengers on domestic routes have no standard free checked baggage allowance, but foldable strollers and car seats can be checked free of charge. All domestic checked bags must comply with standard cargo size limits for safe storage.

Special Baggage Items on Korean Air

special baggages for Korean Air

Sports gear, musical instruments and medical devices follow special baggage rules. They count toward standard free baggage allowances; excess weight/size incurs regular fees. Oversized or special items may need prior airline approval and hard-case packaging.

Traveling with Sports Equipment on Korean Air

Allowed sports equipment maxes out at 32kg and 292cm total dimension and requires hard-case protection. Motorized sports gear and hoverboards are fully banned.

Standard packing rules: Bicycles need pedals removed and handlebars fixed; surfboards/wakeboards need fins removed and bagged; one sports bag + two bundled sticks counts as one checked item. Oversized sports gear requires advance approval and excess fees.

Traveling with Strollers, Car Seats, and Medical Equipment

Strollers, car seats and baby bassinets are free to check for infants on all routes and do not count toward standard baggage quotas.

All essential medical equipment (wheelchairs, walking aids, portable oxygen devices) flies free of charge regardless of size or weight. Large medical gear requires advance notice for priority handling.

In-Cabin Pet Travel Rules

Small pets are allowed to travel in the cabin under strict eligibility and size restrictions for all international and domestic routes.

  • Minimum pet age: 8 weeks old
  • Total combined weight of the pet and its travel carrier: no more than 7kg
  • Hard-sided carrier maximum dimensions: 45cm (length) × 32cm (width) × 19cm (height)
  • Soft-sided carrier maximum height: 25cm
  • All pet carriers must be fully placed under the seat directly in front of the passenger throughout the flight

Musical Instrument Transportation Rules

Travelers can transport musical instruments via three official methods, based on the instrument’s size and value:

  1. Cabin carry-on: Small instruments like violins can replace standard cabin baggage, provided they meet the 115cm total dimension limit for carry-on items.
  2. Seat booking for large instruments: Oversized or high-value instruments (such as cellos, double basses and geomungo) exceeding cabin size limits require a separate passenger seat reservation. Travelers can contact Korean Air official service centers for 24/7 English and Korean support to complete arrangements.
  3. Checked baggage: This method is not recommended due to high damage risks. If necessary, instruments must be packed in a dedicated rigid travel hard case, and passengers need to complete a “Limitation of Liability (Musical Instruments)” form at the airport check-in counter.

Instruments exceeding 203cm in total dimension or 32kg in weight cannot be checked normally. Travelers must either book a separate cabin seat for the instrument or arrange professional freight transportation.

Tips for Packing Within Korean Air Baggage Limits

korean air baggage allowance: Packing Essentials

These actionable packing strategies help travelers maximize baggage allowances and fully avoid excess fees while complying with all Korean Air rules:

  • Choose compliant luggage: Select suitcases and backpacks that strictly match official size limits; avoid expandable luggage sections that easily exceed dimension caps after packing.
  • Optimize weight distribution: Place heavy compact items (electronics, toiletries) in approved cabin personal items to save checked baggage weight for bulky lightweight belongings.
  • Wear heavy items: Wear thick jackets, heavy footwear, and bulky accessories instead of packing them to reduce luggage load.
  • Consolidate liquids properly: Comply with 100ml per-container liquid rules and store all liquids in a single 1L resealable transparent bag to avoid security repacking delays.
  • Share allowances: Distribute excess luggage weight and pieces among travel companions to utilize full group free baggage quotas.
  • Pre-check and pre-pay: Weigh all luggage before airport arrival and pre-purchase extra baggage online early if overages are unavoidable for maximum savings.
  • Use hard cases for special items: Always pack sports gear and musical instruments in rigid hard shells to avoid damage and comply with airline packaging requirements.

Restricted and Prohibited Items on Korean Air

korean air baggage Handling

Korean Air enforces strict item restrictions for cabin and checked baggage to ensure flight safety.

Totally Banned Items

Flammables, pressurized gas, weapons, explosives, hazardous materials, batteries over 160Wh, non-removable battery heat devices, and electric smart bags with fixed batteries are banned in all luggage.

Liquid & Aerosol Rules

All cabin liquids, aerosols and gels: max 100ml per container, all stored in one 1L transparent resealable bag per passenger.

Power Bank Rules

Power banks/spare batteries are cabin-only (forbidden in checked bags). Under 100Wh (max 5 units) are allowed; 100–160Wh needs airline approval (max 2 units). They cannot be used or charged mid-flight.

Final Notes

All Korean Air baggage rules vary by cabin class and route type. Following the official size, weight and item restrictions, and pre-preparing luggage in advance can help travelers avoid excess fees and check-in delays. For special or oversized items, prior airline confirmation is always recommended to ensure a smooth travel experience.

Each room comes with a KRW 50,000 gift card: I forgot how to use this one. Located in Myeongdong, it's an older five-star hotel. Because it's an older five-star, the building is a bit low-rise and not very prominent in Myeongdong (as a person bad with directions, I had to use navigation every time to get back to the hotel). The Airport Limousine Bus 6701 goes directly there, which is super convenient! Across from the hotel: There's a 7-Eleven and GS25 if you use the underground passage. Next door, there's an emart24. Facilities: Well-equipped. Cleanliness: Good. Ambiance: Stylish, but the corridor outside the room had a slightly unpleasant smell. It's very close to Lotte Department Store, and Shinsegae Department Store isn't far either; Shinsegae is a bit better for shopping. Service: Polite and enthusiastic. The room key card is made of wood and is quite beautiful.

This hotel is perfectly located! It's just south of Seoul City Hall Square and west of Myeongdong. The subway station is only a few dozen meters from the lobby entrance, and Sejong-daero is right to the west. It's also not far from the major palaces and Namsan, so the location couldn't be better. The staff are very friendly, attentive, and welcoming. While the facilities might feel a bit more compact compared to newly built five-star hotels in China, they are well-maintained and perfectly adequate. Overall, it offers great value for money.

Overall, I had a very satisfying stay. The room was clean and comfortable, and the view overlooking Namsan and downtown Seoul was truly impressive. The night skyline, in particular, was one of the highlights of this hotel. What made this stay even more special was the service provided by Manager Minji Cho. Her thoughtful, professional, and genuinely attentive care made the entire experience feel very comfortable and welcoming. Her sincere approach left a lasting impression. Everything from the facilities to the service was excellent, and this is definitely a hotel I would be happy to return to on my next visit to Seoul. I would like to sincerely thank Manager Minji Cho for the outstanding service.

Very beautiful hotel. Greeted by staffs who helped open the car door, and get your bags and luggage to the check in counter every day! Only bummer was at check out timing is 11am, we tried asking for later check out timing during check-in and was told hotel is full. Managed to get a late check out of 12pm when we tried again the night before leaving the hotel. Hotel has a little mall,a coffee bean, CU, some expensive restaurants. It also has a sauna (30K won per pax), 1 hot and cold tub and one sauna room. Room amenities can be requested via the web app in your room. Rooms were very modern, however Water from the shower does flood the dry toilet area a little. Generally a great stay.

I paid 1846 CNY for an accessible deluxe king room. To those of you reading this, please don't overlook the 'accessible' part – it really means accessible, in a way that’s not good. The bathroom, as shown in the first picture, has no wet/dry separation, so after a shower, the entire bathroom is soaked. If you absolutely must stay here, make sure to book a different room type. Secondly, the homepage stated a 1.8-meter king bed, but it was at most 1.5 meters (see picture 2), and one side was against the wall, which was extremely inconvenient. The detailed room photos didn't show anything like this! Thirdly, regarding the 'city view' from the bed (see picture 3), it was literally a wall outside the window, and there was a loud rumbling noise from somewhere outside – I honestly felt like calling the police! Finally, the details page said check-in starts at 3 PM. I went to check in at 3:10 PM, and was told that the specific room I booked was the only accessible one available and there were no other rooms to switch to. The Korean male at the front desk checking me in was really mean. I decided to go back to my room and contact Trip.com customer service. After over an hour of back-and-forth communication, and despite Trip.com trying to resolve the issue, it was incredibly frustrating. Who wants to land in Korea and immediately deal with this kind of crap? It really ruined my mood. Anyway, I gave up, accepted it, and just resigned myself to the situation. So, if you're reading this, consider carefully whether to book this hotel or use this platform. I later saw that the IHG official website had cheaper prices than what I paid, and I wonder if booking directly would have been better. Next time I'm in Seoul, I definitely won't choose this place; I'll try somewhere else.

Staying at this hotel in Seoul is incredibly convenient. Getting here from Incheon Airport is a breeze – just take bus 6015 directly to the hotel, and for your return, you can catch the bus right outside. It's super handy! There are also several subway stations nearby. If you're coming from Line 2, exit 10 has an escalator, which is great if you're traveling with luggage. Check-in was fast and the staff were lovely, always smiling. The room itself was clean and comfortable. The housekeeping staff did an excellent job daily, even noticing I have long hair that needs blow-drying and kindly swapped out my old hairdryer for a newer, more efficient one. That was a really thoughtful touch!

I’ve stayed here several times in the past, and it didn’t disappoint again. The room is huge, the bathroom is nice and clean, and the staff are always kind and helpful. The room temperature was excellent and kept very warm during the cold winter in Seoul. The hotel is right outside a metro station, which makes getting around very convenient. This time I also discovered they have self-lock luggage lockers, free for the first 24 hours (or available for a small fee after), which was very useful. The laundry machines are also affordable and work well, with dryers available too. Overall, a very comfortable and reliable place to stay that I would happily return to again.

Facilities: Overall, pretty good. Even though the hotel is old, the facilities are well-maintained. The main drawbacks are that there are no power outlets by the bedside table, so you have to charge your devices at the desk. Also, one washing machine was out of order, leading to queues during peak laundry hours in the evening. Cleanliness: Very clean. Environment: Great location, close to Dongdaemun History & Culture Park subway station Exit 6 (just a few hundred meters walk, very convenient). You can see Namsan Tower from the window. The CJ ENM building is directly opposite the hotel. It's very convenient for visiting Dongdaemun, Myeongdong, Gyeongbokgung, etc. However, Exit 6 of the subway has many stairs, which can be really tiring if you're carrying a large suitcase. Service: Overall good. The front desk staff all speak Chinese, so communication is smooth. Any issues are resolved promptly. (All photos were taken with a 1x lens, no wide-angle. The room is genuinely very small, but it's clean, conveniently located, and a good choice when the price is right.)

The Koreana Hotel truly stands as a representative hotel in Korea, embodying understated luxury and elegance. It's nestled in the heart of Seoul, right next to Gwanghwamun Square and Cheonggyecheon Stream, offering stunning distant views of Namsan Mountain, especially beautiful at night. Opened in 1972, the Koreana Hotel played a significant role in international events, operating the main press center restaurant during the 1988 Seoul Olympics and later the Paralympics Athletes' Village restaurant. It has consistently served as an important hub for hosting international guests! We booked the Koreana Hotel this time because we had tickets for the Harry Potter 25th Anniversary Concert at Sejong Center for the Performing Arts on Friday evening from 7-9 PM. ^u^ For check-in, you need to prepare your ID card or passport. We were given a fantastic room on the 15th floor with an unparalleled night view. We are truly grateful for the hotel's excellent care! Although the room is around 30 square meters, it actually felt like 50 square meters. The decor is luxurious French style, comfortable yet elegant, and perfectly quiet. I had expected it to be somewhat old, but it's incredibly well-maintained and renovated, and the TV even connects directly to YouTube – a clear sign of how the world is changing and hotels are continuously improving! The bedding was also excellent with a very comfortable mattress. For travelers, getting a good night's rest, relaxing completely, and waking up refreshed and energized for the next day is crucial, and we both slept wonderfully! The room came with an iPad for ordering room service and hotel amenities, allowing many tasks to be completed quietly, which I absolutely loved. The hotel's response was incredibly fast; service requests were delivered within 5-10 minutes! We ordered abalone porridge for breakfast, and it was delivered promptly 20 minutes after we scheduled the preparation time. One portion was more than enough for both an adult and a child, and we enjoyed it very much! Do note that the hotel does not provide toothpaste, toothbrushes, facial cleanser, or combs – only soap! Other items are available in a paid amenity kit, so be aware when checking in. There are two bottles of complimentary water; it's more economical to purchase additional water at a convenience store.

First off, the hotel service is great, especially the breakfast. There's a good variety, and the waiter is really enthusiastic and quite charming. The hygiene is just okay; I found a hair on the bed, and the bedding felt a bit old and worn. The duvet was also a little thin. The bathroom has a bathtub, which isn't very convenient; I think it would be better to remove it, though that might be too costly. The hotel's location is excellent, right near Dongdaemun, with plenty of shopping malls and restaurants nearby. The price isn't too high either, so overall, it's great value for money.

The room was really tiny. Whatever you do, don't buy any package deals, like the one for Petite France – it's incredibly far, like an hour and a half to two hours away, and you can't even get a refund. It doesn't really feel like a five-star hotel; more like a four-star. You can walk to Myeongdong in about 20 minutes from the hotel by taking the underground passage straight from Dongdaemun. But I found Korea to be quite run down, with power lines everywhere. Unless you're a big K-pop fan or love concerts, a trip to Korea can be pretty disappointing. The photo is of a cafe in a shopping area near Dongdaemun. This hotel isn't far from Dongdaemun.

I stayed at this hotel while visiting Korea for a health check-up at Korea University Guro Hospital, and my first impression was excellent thanks to the incredibly kind front desk staff. Since I needed to drink a lot of water for my colonoscopy preparation, they generously provided plenty of bottled water and showed such warm hospitality throughout my stay. I stayed in Room 803, and the small private balcony with a beautiful city view was absolutely wonderful. I stayed with my mother, and the bedding was so clean and comfortable that I was able to forget my worries about the health check-up the next day and sleep very peacefully. Another thing I really appreciated was the taxi stand located right outside the hotel. Since I did not have a Korean phone number, it was difficult to call Kakao Taxi, so having taxis readily available made everything so convenient. The room was spacious enough to open two large suitcases at once, and the bathroom was fine too. The air conditioning wasn't super powerful, but it kept the room at a comfortable temperature overnight – not too cold, just right. If I had to pick a flaw, it would be the lack of charging outlets; there was only one by the desk, which wasn't very convenient. However, the price was excellent, and public transportation right outside the door was very convenient. The hotel also offered free shuttle buses to various shopping areas. Traveling with kids means location, transport, and dining options, catering to both crowds and quiet spots, are all key considerations. First off, the location was perfect – the airport shuttle drops you right at the hotel, just across the street. We noticed fewer Chinese guests and more European and American visitors. Right opposite the hotel, there's Olive Young, McDonald's, and a fried chicken joint. To the left and right of the hotel entrance, you'll find a 7-Eleven on each side. The streets behind the hotel are packed with restaurants. Just about 200 meters to the left of the hotel entrance is Mapo Subway Station, which is only one stop from Yeouido Department Store – super convenient. If you head right from the hotel, you'll reach Gongdeok Subway Station, where you can find the popular Egg Drop sandwiches, which are a great value for breakfast. The hotel doesn't provide toothbrushes or toothpaste, so it's a good idea to bring your own set. If you forget, there's a machine on the first floor where you can buy them. For your return journey, you can catch the airport shuttle to the airport right in front of the McDonald's opposite the hotel. You can buy tickets on-site by scanning a QR code or paying with cash. Highly recommend this hotel for families with children.

The staff throughout were warm, professional and incredibly helpful — nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast spread was impressive with a good variety of Korean and Western options. Mapo is a great neighbourhood — safe, vibrant and full of great dining options just steps from the hotel. Would highly recommend Roynet Hotel Mapo for families visiting Seoul. We will definitely be back! 🇰🇷

The location is fantastic! Subway Lines 2 and 4 are right nearby, making it super convenient for getting around. Myeongdong Lotte, Myeongdong Shinsegae, and the Myeongdong shopping street are all within easy reach. Plus, the airport shuttle bus stop is less than a five-minute walk from the hotel. The hotel staff are really friendly and helpful. There's a Korean lady at the front desk who speaks excellent Chinese, and another Chinese lady, so communication was a breeze. The lobby has a free coffee machine and popcorn, and the doorman works quite late. You need to use your key card to access the guest floors, which made me feel very secure. While the room isn't huge, I could easily open up two 28-inch suitcases. I was very satisfied with my stay this time.

I've never had such a terrible and basic hotel breakfast! I've stayed at this hotel many times because of its excellent location and convenient transportation, but this was my first time trying the breakfast, and it was extremely disappointing, far below a star-rated hotel's standard. The unfriendliness of Koreans towards Chinese people isn't a new thing either.

This hotel is quite old. For a hotel that costs 4-5k a night during peak season, the view from the window is really just average, to be honest. The interior design of the rooms is also very ordinary. My mom even said it's not as good as a 400 RMB/night hotel back home [awkward laugh]. It's supposed to be a hotel with an 'old money' vibe, but apart from the slightly more luxurious lobby design, you really can't see any five-star luxury anywhere else. My stay experience gets 🌟🌟🌟, and the interior design only gets 🌟🌟🌟🌟. However, it's right next to Shilla Duty Free, just a two or three-minute walk away. So, it's convenient for those 'suckers' who want to shop at the duty-free store.

Whenever I visit Seoul, I always stay here. The hotel has a direct indoor walkway to Yongsan Station, so you don't have to worry about getting wet on rainy days. It's also incredibly convenient for getting to Myeongdong, Yeouido, and Itaewon. I stayed in a high-floor room with views of Namsan Tower and the Han River. The room was clean and tidy, the bedding was comfortable, and the separate wet and dry areas in the bathroom were a huge plus. The front desk staff communicated smoothly, were polite and efficient. If you arrive early, they can hold your room for you, and you can store your luggage and head out to explore!

The location is good, directly opposite of the lake and next to Lotte world mall. To MTR it’s 5-7mins. The front desk staff is not accommodative at all, any request is like „no, we can’t“ attitude. As of the cleanness and amenities, first of all, the shower head did not work properly, the aircon did not work during the first night ( better the second and third) and the tooth brush glass had stains when I checked in ( see photo attached ) Overall, not recommended for luxury stay, but if it’s just a family vacay, why not.

We visited Banyan Tree to relax for a day after the ceremony! As soon as we entered the room, we were greeted with a delightful bouquet of flowers and a glass of wedding wine, which was incredibly satisfying! My husband's shoes were even cleaned and brought back the next day. As always, we were impressed by the exceptional service and convenience, and we had a wonderful rest! We were a little disappointed we couldn't make a spa reservation in advance, but we'll definitely make one next time! Overall, we were very satisfied! Oh, and there's no convenience store, so it's best to stock up on necessities beforehand! There were so many things to do at the hotel that it was a shame to leave! Have a wonderful day everyone!

“The service provided by the hotel staff was great. We were able to store our luggage at the lobby early in the morning before check-in. When we returned after 3pm to check in, we were pleasantly informed that we had received a complimentary room upgrade. The hotel staff were friendly, helpful, and welcoming throughout our stay. The hotel’s location was also very convenient and easily accessible, which made our trip much more enjoyable.

The hotel is conveniently located right next to the 6001 airport bus stop. There's a CU and GS25 convenience store nearby, and it's also very close to the subway station with an underground passage leading directly to it. The hotel itself is clean, and the front desk service is excellent.

The only good thing I can say about this hotel is its convenient location. Everything else just doesn't live up to the Sheraton flagship brand. The facilities felt more like an upgraded budget hotel in China. The hygiene experience was really poor; every room had torn window screens. After contacting the hotel through Trip.com customer service, we had to switch rooms twice. The cleanliness was still unsatisfactory, with mosquitoes and bugs. And the screens were still broken.

The service at this Korean hotel was truly impressive; the staff were always smiling and eager to help. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and well-equipped, making for a very relaxing stay. Its convenient location, with excellent transport links and diverse dining options nearby, really added to the ease and enjoyment of our trip. Overall, we had a very satisfying experience and would highly recommend it to anyone planning a trip to Korea.

Returning to the Shilla Stay Samsung for the second time, I am reminded of why I like this hotel. The room climate control works perfectly, keeping the space at a very comfortable temperature. Additionally, the bedding is exceptional; the mattress strikes the perfect balance between firm and soft, making it easy to get a restful night's sleep. It remains a highly valuable and reliable choice.
