Beijing Airport Layover: Can You Leave the Airport?

For most travelers, the answer is yes: you can leave the airport during a Beijing layover and visit the city, thanks to China's expanded visa-free entry schemes. Which scheme applies depends on your passport and your routing, and border inspection has the final say, so eligibility is worth confirming before you build any plans.

The second question is time. A layover that looks generous on paper shrinks fast once you factor in clearing immigration, transport to and from the city, and leaving a healthy buffer for your onward flight. This guide covers which entry rule fits your passport, how to work out your real usable time at Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) or Beijing Daxing Airport (PKX), and what to visit in Beijing with the time you have.

Can You Leave Beijing Airport During a Layover?

Most travelers can now easily leave Beijing Airport during a layover: around 50 nationalities qualify for visa-free entry, while another group of nationalities (including the United States) can use the 240-hour visa-free transit policy. Travelers from any other country transiting within 24 hours can apply for a temporary entry permit at the border.

Note that meeting the conditions makes you eligible to apply, and admission is decided by border inspection. No policy guarantees entry, so build your plans with that in mind.

How to Apply for Temporary Entry at PEK or PKX

This section covers transit entry, which means you’re entering Beijing on either the 24-hour or 240-hour transit schemes. You have to do this at the border after you land; there’s no way to organize it beforehand. And it's worth pointing out again: entry isn’t guaranteed; border officers can deny your application and you’ll have to stay within the airport. 

Steps to applying for temporary entry:

1. Follow the signage for international transfer, visa-free transit or immigration once you have landed and disembarked the plane.
2. Find the transit counter. Border inspection operates a dedicated channel for visa-free transit applications, separate from the general foreigners' queue.
3. Complete the arrival card (tip: you can do so online before you fly).
4. Present your documents. Passport, your confirmed onward ticket with seat and date, any visa or entry authorization required by your onward destination, and accommodation or itinerary details if asked.
5. Answer the officer's questions. They might ask about your onward flight or what you’re planning to do in Beijing. 
6. Enter if approved. The permit is issued as a stamp or sticker in your passport, showing the dates you may stay.

Is Your Layover Long Enough to Go Into Beijing?

Of course, your scheduled layover is not how much time you'll have available to explore a part of Beijing. You want to know how much usable time you have to work with, rather than your total layover time.

To figure out how much usable time you have there are a lot of different things to consider. Some aren't set in stone either; for example, the time to get through immigration might be much longer if your flight arrives together with several more long-haul flights.

Here are some general timing guidelines to help you calculate how much time you have:

• Deplaning and reaching immigration: 20 to 40 minutes
• Transit permit and immigration: 45 to 90 minutes when several long-haul arrivals land together
• Baggage: zero if checked through, 30 to 45 minutes if you are collecting and re-checking later
• Transport each way: 45 to 75 minutes door to door for central Beijing, from either airport
• Return formalities: allow three hours before an international departure for check-in, security and exit control

Run that against a ten-hour connection at PEK with bags checked through and you land somewhere near three to four hours of actual time in the city. That is why a layover that sounds generous on paper often supports one neighborhood and nothing more.

PEK vs PKX: Which Beijing Airport Are You Using?

Another thing to think about when you're considering a visit to Beijing on a layover is whether you’re flying into Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) or Beijing Daxing Airport (PKX). Here are the major differences in location, transport, and how long it takes to get into the city. 

Note that the above times are estimations of the journey time, and don’t include getting through immigration, collecting baggage, walking to the train station, etc.

What Can You Realistically Do on a Beijing Layover?

You can realistically leave the airport and travel into Beijing city to see a few sights, as long as you have an 8-hour layover at a minimum. 

Beijing Layover Under 8 Hours: Stay Airside 

This gives you about 1 hour of usable time, so it’s not worth leaving the airport. By the time you clear immigration and get back through departures you have gained nothing. 

8 to 10 Hour Layover in Beijing: 798 Art District or Olympic Park

You’ve got around one to three hours of usable time with this layover, which means you should stay close to the airport. Both the 798 Art District and Olympic Park, site of the 2008 Olympics and 2022 Winter Olympics, are good options. 

10 to 12 Hour Layover in Beijing: One Neighborhood

This frees up around three to five hours of usable time for Beijing; we'd recommend sticking to one neighborhood. Here are a couple of options to consider:

Option A: Yonghegong and the Hutongs

• Airport Express to Dongzhimen, then Line 2 or Line 5 to Yonghegong.
• Walk Guozijian Street and Wudaoying Hutong. Old alleyways, courtyard cafes and small shops, with no tickets and no reservations required.
• Add Lama Temple only if you booked ahead.
• Eat in the hutongs and head back.

Option B: Qianmen, Dashilan and Wangfujing

1. Airport Express to Dongzhimen, then Line 2 to Qianmen.
2. Walk the traditional shopping streets of Qianmen and Dashilan, south of Tiananmen Square. Both are open public streets with nothing to book.
3. Eat your way along: zhajiangmian, dumplings, Beijing snacks.
4. Wangfujing pedestrian street is a short hop north if you want more of the same.

If you plan to do Tiananmen Square itself, you'll need to reserve in advance, and note that the security lines to get in can be quite long on busy days.

12 Hour Layover in Beijing: The Great Wall

A 12-hour layover or longer gives you at least five hours of usable time, which opens up a visit to the Great Wall. The Mutianyu section is nicely restored and walkable, and has a cable car as well so no precious time is wasted climbing up steep sets of stairs. The journey needs roughly three hours of round-trip driving; add in some walking on the wall and you’ve used up most of your hours with one of the best things you can see near Beijing. If the excursion sounds like too much, then you'll have plenty of time to explore parts of the city.

The Free Beijing Express Layover Tour

Beijing Express is a free half-day layover tour run by Trip.com Group for international transit passengers arriving at Beijing Capital with a layover of over eight hours. 

Two routes run daily: 

• Mutianyu Great Wall Tour: Departs at 7:30 and returns at 1:00 PM. 
• Highlights Half-Day City Tour: Departs at 13:30 and returns at 21:00. 

Transport, attraction tickets, Wi-Fi, an English-speaking guide and group insurance are included. To register, you’ll have to make your way to the T3 INternational Arrivals hall, with the team located next to the Manner coffee shop. 

Spaces are limited, and operate on a first-come, first-served basis.It runs at Beijing Capital Airport only, and you still have to clear immigration first.

Baggage, Boarding Passes and Getting Back for Your Flight

Here are some more things to consider when it comes to getting back to Beijing Airport in time for your flight: baggage and boarding passes. 

• Are your bags checked through to your final destination? If they aren't, you'll need to wait for them at Beijing airport, and then either visit the city towing around your suitcase or make use of the airport's luggage storage. You'll find counters in the arrivals hall of terminals 2 and 3.
• Do you already have your onward boarding pass? If you don't, you'll need to queue up to pick it up at the transfer desk either before leaving for your layover in Beijing or when you return to the airport.

What If You Cannot Leave the Airport?

Plenty of layovers end at the terminal, and not always for reasons you control. Sometimes your temporary entry might be declined, immigration queues are simply too long, your inbound flight ran late, or any other number of things. 

If that happens, here's what you should do:

• Stay inside the authorized area. Do not argue any denial of entry, and continue on your way into the main departures area. 
• Reconfirm your gate and boarding time. Delays can cascade, so it’s a good idea to check whether your onward flight has been affected. 
• Find the airline transfer desk. If you don’t have your boarding pass, this should be your first priority. 
• Settle in properly. Capital Airport T3 operates around the clock and has lounges, restaurants and rest areas.

Beijing Layover Checklist Before You Book

Before booking

• Check current visa-free entry eligibility according to your passport
• Which airport, PEK or PKX, and which terminal
• One ticket or separate tickets
• Bags checked through, or not
• Arrival time of day, and whether the last train will still be running
• Scheduled layover long enough to give you some usable time

After you land

• Actual arrival time against the schedule
• Time remaining once you recalculate from now

After temporary entry is granted

• Permit dates check out
• Return transport identified, including the last departure that gets you back in time
• Any attraction reservation confirmed and in your name

Go ahead with the city plan only if all three checkpoints pass. If any one fails, the airport is the answer.
