If your suitcase is on the larger side, head to the JR East Travel Service Center inside Tokyo Station and use the staffed counter to store oversized luggage during business hours (8:30 AM–7:00 PM). Storing regular small items costs about 500–800 yen per item per day, while large items run 800–1,200 yen. Note that overnight storage isn’t available here, so plan to pick up your bags no later than 30 minutes before closing time.

Tokyo Station Staffed Baggage Storage #2 GRANSTA

If you need overnight storage, we highly recommend GRANSTA Luggage Storage, located in the GRANSTA shopping area. It’s open daily from 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM, and you can store your luggage for up to 15 days! The fee is 1,400 yen per item. Since there are only 50 storage spots, we suggest reserving your space online in advance.

Tokyo Station Staffed Luggage Storage #3 — Sagawa Express TOKYO SERVICE CENTER

Sagawa Express TOKYO SERVICE CENTER is arguably the best bang-for-your-buck luggage storage option near Tokyo Station. It’s open from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM, and storing standard luggage costs just 800 yen per day. They also offer delivery to your hotel (for an extra fee, and you’ll need to arrange it before 11:00 AM each day), so after a full day out, you can head back to your hotel and have your bags waiting for you.

Self-service coin lockers come in two types: traditional key-operated ones and those operated by tapping an IC card (like Suica, PASMO, etc.). Here’s a quick guide to using both. One more thing to note: both types charge per use—once you open the locker, you’ll need to pay again.

Key-operated storage lockers

1. Find an empty locker that matches your luggage size, and place your luggage inside.
2. After inserting the required amount, turn the key to lock it.
3. Keep the key safe—you’ll need this key to open the locker when you pick up your luggage.

IC card-operated lockers

1. Find an empty locker that fits your luggage and shows a green light, then place your luggage inside.
2. Jot down your locker number, then head to the nearby smart screen and enter your locker number. Pay by tapping your IC card (some machines also accept cash; after payment, a password receipt will be printed—be sure to keep it safe).
3. To retrieve your luggage, simply tap the same IC card again. If you have a password receipt, please enter the password on the smart screen.

Luggage Storage at Tokyo Station #1: Tokyo Metro Station

At Tokyo Station’s Marunouchi Line Central Exit and North Exit, you’ll find several coin-operated lockers. Most lockers here are small, with limited medium and large-sized options.

Tokyo Station Luggage Storage #2 JR Tokyo Station

Outside the JR Tokyo Station ticket gates, there are nearly 2,000 lockers. If you’re traveling with large luggage, head to the Yaesu Underground Central Gate—there are about 80 extra-large lockers in this area. Inside the JR Tokyo Station ticket gates, you’ll also find close to 3,000 locker spaces; in particular, the Sobu Line transfer passage alone has nearly 1,800 spaces. Note that most lockers here are key-operated and coin-only, so be sure to have some change ready.

Shinjuku Station Luggage Storage #1 Shinjuku Subway Station

Shinjuku subway station doesn’t have many lockers—most are clustered near the east-side ticket gates. There are about 170 storage spaces in total, and only 3 extra-large luggage lockers.

Shinjuku Station Luggage Storage #2: JR Shinjuku Station

Shinjuku JR Station offers about 1,000 luggage storage spots, mostly clustered around the East Exit, though you’ll also find lockers by the West and South Exits. Keep in mind that most lockers here are on the smaller side.

You’ll find lockers of various sizes at the JR Station’s Hachikō ticket gate, South ticket gate, and Central ticket gate—nearly 400 in total. However, the largest available are large-size lockers; there aren’t any extra-large storage spaces.

Shibuya Tokyu Station also offers luggage lockers. You’ll find a larger concentration near the A2 exit on the B2 level, while others are scattered around the ticket gates and exits on B1 through B3. Note that there are no lockers for extra-large luggage here, either.

There are a total of four luggage locker areas outside Ueno Subway Station, though not many; the largest concentration is near Exit 8, with more than 70 lockers.

Ueno Luggage Storage #2 JR Ueno Station

Around JR Ueno Station, there are close to 1,000 storage spaces, with the largest clusters at three spots: the connecting passage inside the Shinobazu Ticket Gate, outside the Asakusa Exit near the Central Ticket Gate, and inside the Park Ticket Gate. If you need extra-large luggage storage, head to the area near Platform 17 inside the Central Ticket Gate. There are nearly 40 extra-large luggage lockers there.

If you need to store chilled items, take the connecting passage from Tokyo Station to Daimaru Tokyo Department Store. You’ll find refrigerated lockers near the fresh food section on the B1 floor. Just a heads-up: these lockers aren’t for overnight storage. The power is turned off after the store closes, so be sure to pick up your items during business hours.
