Chengdu vs Chongqing: Which City Should You Visit? (2026

by Robin
June 21, 2026

Chengdu and Chongqing are less than two hours apart by fast train, yet they couldn't be more different. One city is flat and easily navigable by foot with panda reserves and traditional teahouses. The other is located on cliffs overlooking two rivers with one of the most spectacular skylines in all of Asia. Let's see how you can decide which to visit.

Chengdu vs. Chongqing: Which City to Choose
Chengdu is more relaxed, culturally layered, and better positioned for panda encounters and Sichuan nature trips. Chongqing is more visually dramatic, with a cityscape and nightscape unlike anything else in China.
Traveler Type | Better Choice |
|---|---|
First time in China | Chengdu |
Short on time (1-2 days) | Chongqing |
Foodie | Both — very different experiences |
Photography and architecture | Chongqing |
Families with kids | Chengdu |
Couples | Chongqing (for the night views) |
Nightlife | Chongqing |
Pandas and nature | Chengdu |
Budget traveler | Chengdu (marginally cheaper) |
If this is your first trip to Southwest China and you can only pick one city, vising Chengdu is the way to go. It's more accessible, easier to navigate, and gives you a broader range of day trip options. If you've been to China before and you want a different feel when visiting, Chongqing is the choice to make.
Chengdu vs. Chongqing: Itineraries

- 1 day: Choose a city and stick with it. If in Chongqing, then Hongyadong, Yangtze River cable car, and enjoy the night view at two rivers. If in Chengdu, then go to the Giant Panda Base in the morning (before 9am) and Jinli Ancient Street or Kuanzhai Alley in the afternoon.
- 2 days: Explore only one city deeply. Two days in Chengdu will give you the Giant Panda Base, Wuhou Shrine, People’s Park teahouse and proper Sichuan meal. If in Chongqing, then visit Ciqikou Old Town, a walk along the mountain ridge, night at Jiefangbei and possibly the Liziba Light Rail if timing is right.
- 3 days: Include a day-trip. From Chengdu – Giant Buddha at Leshan or Dujiangyan both within 2-hour drive. From Chongqing – Wulong Karst National Geopark within a 3-hour drive or Dazu Rock Carvings in 1.5-hours drive.
- 4+ Days: Both. High-speed trains run regularly between Chengdu and Chongqing and take only around 1–1.5 hours, which makes this trip convenient. Possible travel plan: take a flight to Chengdu, spend there 2–3 days, take a train to Chongqing, stay there 2 days, fly out of Chongqing — or vice versa depending on your starting point.
Which City to Begin with if I want to visit both Chengdu and Chongqing?
If you take a flight from Xi'an or go by train from the north of China, it will be easier to start in Chengdu. On the other hand, If you're traveling from Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, Jiangbei Airport in Chongqing may be the best option due to its convenience compared to high speed rails.
Chengdu vs Chongqing: Attractions, Sightseeing, Pandas, and Day Trips
Top Chengdu attractions:

- Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding — arrive before 9am to beat the crowds and see the pandas when they're most active
- Wuhou Shrine and Jinli Ancient Street — they share an entrance; worth half a day
- Kuanzhai Alley — more relaxed than Jinli, better for street food grazing
- People's Park — genuinely local: tea, mahjong, and ballroom dancing on a Tuesday morning
Day trips from Chengdu: Leshan Giant Buddha (UNESCO World Heritage), Dujiangyan irrigation system, Mount Qingcheng, and with more time, Jiuzhaigou Valley.
Top Chongqing attractions:

- Hongyadong — the stacked riverside architecture is the main draw; go at night
- Liziba Light Rail Station — where Line 2 passes through a residential building
- Two-river night cruise — the full panoramic way to see the city
- Jiefangbei pedestrian zone
- Mountain city walking trails (Shancheng Budao) — underrated and genuinely beautiful
Day trips from Chongqing: Wulong Karst National Geopark, Dazu Rock Carvings (a UNESCO site most visitors skip).
One practical difference worth flagging: Chengdu's attractions are mostly flat and accessible — good for families, older travelers, or anyone who packed the wrong shoes. Chongqing is built across hillsides. Stairs, steep lanes, and multi-level streets are part of the experience, and some neighborhoods require real walking effort. That's part of the city's character — just know before you go.
Chengdu vs Chongqing: Food and Nightlife
Both cities are famous for spicy food. They're not the same.
Chengdu lies right in the heart of Sichuan cuisine. The hotness in Chengdu is numbing and spicy – the famous má là combination. Meals include things like mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, and deliciously flavorful chicken, but also other delicacies which cover a wide range of flavors. The tempo is slow. In the afternoon, you’ll find locals playing mahjong at the tea houses. The coffee shops and bars in Yulin and Tongzilim areas are excellent and does not have the tourist feel.

Chongqing food is heavier, oilier, and more aggressively spicy. The hotpot there, which cooked in a beef fat and broth, is a different beast from the Chengdu version. Xiǎo miàn (spicy noodles) is the local breakfast which is highly recommended for anyone who visits Chongqing, with a rich umami flavor and an incredible texture of the noodles. After dark, Nanbin Road's riverside restaurants light up, and the night crowd tends to stay late.

Don't reduce either city to "just spicy food" — the difference is in the approach. Chengdu's cuisine is more nuanced and varied. Chongqing's food culture leans into intensity and communal eating.
Where to stay:
- Chengdu: Chunxi Road / Taikoo Li for convenience; Kuanzhai Alley area for atmosphere; Tongzilim for longer stays or a more local feel
- Chongqing: Jiefangbei / Hongyadong area for first-timers; Guanyinqiao for something more local; Nanbin Road if river views matter

We stayed at the Hotel Dorsett, and overall it was a pretty positive experience, with a few small things to note.
The best parts: The room is very spacious, and the bathroom is super large, with both a bathtub and a shower. The bed is comfortable – though a little firm, and you can feel movement when the other person moves. The curtains, lights, and USB chargers are a great, convenient touch. Breakfast is good, especially for Asian tastes – Western options are limited, but what they have is tasty. The location is fantastic: the metro is just 50 meters away, right at the doorstep. The area is nice and recommended. There was some construction nearby, but it didn't bother us at all.
Could be improved: The only real negative point is the elevator – it takes quite a while.
Bottom line: Highly recommended for the space, cleanliness, and location. If you don't mind waiting a bit for the elevator or a slightly firm bed, everything else more than makes up for it.FromSAR 152

Had a truly restful stay! This is hands down the most comfortable hotel I've stayed in during all my business trips over the years. The materials used here are far superior to many resort brands. I arrived during the latter half of the May Day holiday, and the front desk clerk upgraded me to a one-bedroom suite. The bedding was even more comfortable than Hilton's, perfectly balanced in terms of softness and firmness, and the bed was huge. The room was incredibly quiet, and the surrounding area felt upscale and safe, even when returning late at night. The guests were high-quality, mostly business travelers and international visitors. It truly lives up to Yanlord's reputation – the bathtub, shower, and attention to detail were excellent; even the lampshades were spotless. The entire suite was quiet, safe, and odorless, and it was convenient to get anywhere. Housekeeping was discreet, never disturbing me, so I could sleep in until the afternoon and still enjoy the quiet. This past week truly helped me recharge. I'm sad to leave and will definitely stay here again next time I'm in Chengdu!FromSAR 304

I specifically traveled to Sichuan to pray at Mount Emei and chose to stay at the Ritz-Carlton Chengdu. The experience was absolutely perfect! 👍 It's located right in the city center, close to Tianfu Square and Chunxi Road, making transportation very convenient. The room was spacious and elegant, with expansive city views from the floor-to-ceiling windows, especially beautiful at night. The bedding was soft, ensuring a good night's sleep, and the amenities were exquisite. The staff were attentive and polite, providing meticulous service. This was my first stay at The St. Regis Chengdu, and it was absolutely delightful! The room facilities were excellent, spacious, and had high ceilings. The service was even more attentive and thoughtful. We booked three rooms in total, and the hotel specially arranged them on the same floor and even provided delicious handmade candies. As the weather got hotter, they generously supplied plenty of bottled water daily – truly impressive! The bellhops at the entrance were incredibly helpful and genuinely enthusiastic. They assisted with our luggage. After checking out, we realized a family member's clothing was missing. We contacted the hotel just to try our luck, and they responded quickly, locating the sunscreen jacket that had fallen in the elevator and even shipping it back to us free of charge. This trip to Chengdu was made even more wonderful thanks to the high-quality service provided by The St. Regis. A huge thank you to the hotel once again – this will definitely be our top choice for future visits to Chengdu! I regret forgetting to take pictures of the room.FromSAR 491

My stay at the Jinkun Hotel (Chunxi Road Taikoo Li store) was fantastic!
First, I have to give a special shout-out to Miss Qiqi at the front desk. Her service was warm and professional, and she answered all our questions patiently and thoroughly, which made us feel very welcome.
The hotel's biggest advantage is its incredibly convenient location. You can walk to Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li right out the door, making it super easy to find food, go shopping, or take the subway.

Incredibly convenient location with lots of shops and restuarants nearby and the metro station right across the street. The staff were all very lovely and polite and the facilities provided were sufficient. The main drawback of our rooms were the strange layout. There was no private bathroom, only cubicles for the toilet and shower and an open sink. The cubicles had frosted glass which I found was a bit awkward and did not provide enough privacy. Additionally the toilet cubicle was directly across the window which made things more uncomfortable. I also found it frustrating that all the settings would reset after leaving the room - ie. on your return the tv would automatically turn on and the curtains would be drawn back. The design was also very dated and looked very old, the fenced windows had white cracking paint and the floors which are depicted to be carpeted in the images are actually just wooden floors. Lastly, I had some concerns with the plugs being a bit flimsy, the cover would pop off which I thought was a bit unsafe.FromSAR 149

I chose to stay at Shangri-La Hotel Chengdu again, based on my last 'just right' experience. This time, staff member Xiao Wen not only proactively inquired about my needs beforehand but also thoughtfully arranged breakfast. My daughter had just returned from studying abroad and wasn't adjusting well to the local climate, leaving her feeling unwell and irritable. However, I noticed a change as soon as she stepped into the hotel; she said she recognized the familiar fragrance! The floor attendants were also incredibly helpful. Facilities: The hotel exceeded my expectations. The 'Xiao Du' smart assistant was very intelligent, and the in-room hot tub was super flexible. I asked the front desk and they confirmed there are no time or usage limits, which is fantastic – some places restrict that.
Cleanliness: The bedding was spotless, and the detailed cleaning was excellent. Out of all the hotels I've stayed in, I truly feel this one's room hygiene is top-notch.
Environment: The hotel has a small garden where you can sit and soak up the sun, chatting with family. There's also a sky garden on the 6th floor, another lovely spot to relax in the sun and socialize – very pleasant.
Service: From checking in at the entrance to requesting items during my stay, all the staff were incredibly polite. Even when passing them in the hallways, they'd proactively greet us.
Starbucks Coffee Voucher: There's a coffee bar in the hotel garden where you can use our coffee voucher to redeem Starbucks coffee. Of course, you can also order other items if you wish. We just wrapped up a week-long stay at the W Chengdu, and it was nothing short of spectacular. From the moment we arrived, the ”Whatever/Whenever” philosophy was on full display.
The Welcome Experience
A huge shoutout to Dylan at the reception! He gave us a fantastic introduction to the property and kicked our trip off on a high note by upgrading us to a room on the 20th floor. His warm welcome and professional energy set the tone for the entire week.
The Room
The room was a sanctuary. Despite facing a busy street, the soundproofing was incredible—it was super quiet and peaceful.
• The Sleep: The bed, pillows, and linens were top-tier. I haven't slept that well in a long time.
• The Vibe: Modern, clean, and perfectly equipped.
Wellness & Amenities
As someone who prioritizes fitness while traveling, I was thoroughly impressed by the gym, swimming pool, and sauna. Everything is state-of-the-art.
One small suggestion: The sauna experience would be even more relaxing if the lighting could be dimmed slightly to create a more ”zen” atmosphere.
Dining
Don’t miss the lunch buffet on the 3rd floor. The food quality was outstanding, but the decor and the view really steal the show. It’s a feast for the eyes as much as the palate!
Bottom line: We are already looking forward to our next trip to Chengdu—we wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else. See you again soon, W!

For a five-star hotel, you'd expect better from Hilton. They couldn't even clean the toilet properly! I asked for a toilet seat cover twice. The first time, they told me it was behind the toilet, but it was just a sanitary bag. (Honestly, that really annoyed me – are sanitary pads considered that dirty that they need to be individually wrapped and hidden?) I went to the front desk to get a toilet seat cover, and they gave me two more sanitary bags. I only realized this when I got back to my room, which made me so angry I called and asked for a room change. (They said it was an upgrade, but it wasn't really, just a higher floor.) Then they sent up a toilet seat cover via robot, but it was the wrong size and wouldn't fit... The room facilities are very old. The only good thing I can say is that the bed was comfortable. Service and cleanliness both get a thumbs down.FromSAR 321

The hotel is near Chunxi Road, just a short walk away, which is quite convenient. It's also about a ten-minute walk to the subway station. There was some renovation happening at the hotel entrance, but I didn't really hear any noise. I got a room upgrade when I checked in. There's a laundry room with dryers next to the elevator, which is very handy. Daily housekeeping was also prompt.

I had a very pleasant stay at Fraser Residence Chengdu. The location is very convenient, with a coffee shop and a 7-Eleven just nearby, and the SPK shopping mall within easy walking distance.
The rooms are excellent — spacious, comfortable, and very well equipped. The washing machine in the room is especially handy for longer stays, and the sofa makes it easy to relax after a busy day.
The staff are very friendly and welcoming, which made the stay even more enjoyable. Breakfast is also good, with a nice selection to start the day.

This Home Inn I booked for my trip to Chengdu was easily the best I've ever stayed at; the experience was truly fantastic. The moment I stepped in, I was greeted by a lovely fragrance, which was incredibly pleasant. The front desk staff were also very warm and attentive during check-in, always greeting guests with a smile. Their service was impeccable – always available but never intrusive.
The hotel's overall decor has a distinctly British feel, and both the staff's attire and the interior design were excellent. The environment is quiet despite being in a bustling area; the whole place felt very peaceful.
The hotel breakfast was quite good, offering local Chengdu specialties like 'xiaomian' (noodles), 'chaoshou' (wontons), and 'douhua' (tofu pudding). The cleaning staff were also very friendly; the 'auntie' cleaning our room even brought us extra bottles of water when tidying our room during our extended stay.
The hotel is conveniently located in the city center near Xinnanmen Metro Station, just a 150m walk away. Having the metro so close made getting around and visiting attractions incredibly easy. Chunxi Road is just one metro stop away, and popular spots like Kuanzhai Alley and Wenshu Monastery are also easily accessible. There are plenty of dining options nearby, including 'chuan'er' (skewer) and hot pot restaurants. Just a short walk down University Road, you'll find even more local snacks.

I've been to Chongqing many times, but this was my first stay at a Kempinski. I'd seen on Trip.com that the hotel opened in 2012, so I assumed the facilities and decor might be a bit outdated. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that despite being open for 14 years, this Kempinski is still exceptionally well-maintained. The original construction materials and furnishings were clearly high-quality, luxury items, so overall, aside from the slightly older design and decor style, everything else was unexpectedly good. This includes the dining options – whether it was Elements Western Restaurant, the Beer Bar, or the Executive Lounge, the food quality was impressive. The desserts and bread, in particular, truly showcased the essence of German culinary excellence. Of course, as a boutique hotel under the GHA DISCOVERY alliance, what truly impressed me most was the service. From the welcoming attitude of the staff to the efficiency of the management team in resolving issues, it truly lives up to Kempinski's reputation as a European hotel aristocrat. Special thanks to the hotel management and operations teams for their meticulous care and excellent service during my stay. We were two adults and two children, in town for a concert. Now that the kids are older, a comfortable sleep is a priority, so I always look for hotels with two 1.8m beds. This often limits my choices, as most other hotels only offer 1.35m twin beds. I really appreciate that this place has two 1.8m beds. The location is excellent – a mere three to four-minute walk from Jiefangbei, and the nearest subway station, Jiaochangkou, is less than a 5-minute walk away. The snack street downstairs is also incredibly convenient. It's also very close to Shancheng 18 Steps, and you can take Line 2 directly to the Olympic Sports Center for concerts. Overall, we had a very satisfying stay. We did encounter a couple of minor issues during our stay – the shower head wouldn't switch and the internet wasn't connecting, but these were resolved very quickly. Came to Chongqing for my kid's spring break, and the hotel's location is excellent – you can see Jiefangbei right from the main entrance. However, the hotel is quite old. The air conditioning units feel like they're from a renovation ten years ago. Because it was raining the day we arrived, the room also had a strong musty smell, and there was a bad odor from the bathroom drains. We arrived too late that day to switch rooms, but I did communicate the situation to the front desk when checking out. For my trip to Chongqing, I specifically booked the Niccolo's Deluxe River View King Room, and the overall experience far exceeded my expectations. As a luxury hotel rooted high up in the IFS, this room perfectly embodies the unique sky-high romance of the mountain city.
The room itself is a generous 52 square meters, designed with a minimalist yet sophisticated grey, white, and gold palette. There are no superfluous or cluttered decorations; instead, metallic lines and soft lighting complement each other. Art pieces strategically placed throughout create a rich and elegant atmosphere. Stepping into the room instantly relieved the fatigue of travel.
The full-panel panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows are undoubtedly the room's biggest highlight. With a 270-degree unobstructed view, you can lie in bed and directly face the magnificent confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers. Raffles City Chongqing, Qiansimen Bridge, and the Hongya Cave complex are all arranged within sight. During the day, a thin mist shrouds the river, and the stacked buildings showcase the three-dimensional beauty of the mountain city. As night falls, the city's neon lights gradually illuminate, and the illuminated tour boats and the bridge lights intertwine to form a flowing river of stars – no filters needed for any photos you take.
A soft leisure sofa by the window invites you to sit back and watch the sunset, creating a wonderfully ambient mood. The marble bathtub by the window in the bathroom is another exquisite touch; while soaking, you can look up and admire the panoramic night view. Paired with the hotel's standard high-end Italian bath amenities, the soothing and healing fragrance elevates the sense of comfort to the fullest.
The bedding, made from high-thread-count knitted fabric, feels soft and plush, allowing for quick relaxation and sleep. The smart home control system is convenient and hassle-free, with one-touch control for curtains, lights, and room temperature – a truly thoughtful detail.
The hotel service is meticulous and attentive. The staff at check-in were gentle and explained the room facilities proactively. Turndown service was thoughtfully prepared, and the mini-bar was fully stocked. Being located downstairs from the IFS commercial district made going out for shopping incredibly convenient.
The only slight regret is that Hongya Cave is slightly obstructed from certain angles, but this absolutely does not diminish the overall viewing experience. Whether you're here specifically to experience the mountain city's night view or for a leisurely stay, this Deluxe River View King Room is definitely a worthwhile choice. There are many restaurants across the street from the hotel, so you can easily find something good to eat. The front desk staff were very welcoming. This is my second time staying here, and I'll definitely stay here again next time.FromSAR 123
Chengdu vs. Chongqing: Which One is Cheaper?
Costs: Both cities are affordable by international standards. Chengdu runs slightly cheaper overall — street food, budget hotels, and local transport are all easy to manage. Chongqing's riverside dining and view hotels push the upper end of costs, but the floor is comparable.
Rough daily budget (mid-range traveler): USD 50–80 in Chengdu; USD 60–90 in Chongqing if you want restaurants with a view.
Getting around:
- Both cities have extensive metro systems. Chengdu's is flat and logical. Chongqing's is a feat of engineering — it crosses bridges, goes underground, and emerges mid-skyscraper. Line 2 through Liziba is worth riding just for the spectacle.
- DiDi (China's ride-hailing app) works well in both cities. Have your destination written in Chinese characters before you need it.
- Maps: Amap or Baidu Maps works better than Google Maps in China.
Airports and rail:
- Chengdu: Tianfu International Airport (new, farther out) and Shuangliu Airport (closer to the city center). Main rail hub: Chengdu East Station.
- Chongqing: Jiangbei Airport. Main rail hubs: Chongqing North Station and Chongqing West Station.
- High-speed rail between the two cities: 1–1.5 hours, with departures roughly every 30 minutes.
Weather: Both cities are overcast and humid. Chengdu is famously gray — locals say the sun appears maybe 100 days a year, which makes the nearby mountains feel almost mythical when they do appear. Chongqing earns its reputation as one of China's "furnace cities" in summer; July and August can exceed 40°C. The best times to visit either city are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November).
Safety and practical tips:
- Both cities are very safe for tourists
- Payment: Alipay and WeChat Pay dominate most transactions; a Chinese SIM or eSIM with data is essential
- Chongqing navigation tip: GPS can glitch in the canyon-like street network. Screenshot your route before going underground or into hillside neighborhoods
- Avoid Chongqing's main viewpoints (Hongyadong, Liziba) on weekends and public holidays — crowds are intense; weekday visits are noticeably more pleasant
Ready to Plan? Here's How to Decide
Having trouble determining which one to go? Go with this:
- Choose Chengdu if it's your first time in China, you're traveling with family, or you want a natural base for exploring Sichuan
- Choose Chongqing if you want dramatic cityscapes, a more intense food experience, and somewhere that photographs unlike anywhere else in the world
- Choose both if you have 4+ days — the train ride between them is shorter than most city commutes

Still deciding between Chengdu and Chongqing?
-
Which should you choose, Chengdu or Chongqing?
Chengdu for first-timers, families, panda lovers, and anyone using the city as a base for Sichuan travel. Chongqing for photographers, city architecture fans, and travelers who want the most visually dramatic urban experience in China. With 4+ days, visit both — the high-speed rail makes it easy. -
Is Chengdu or Chongqing better?
Neither is objectively better. Chengdu is more relaxed, accessible, and easier to navigate. Chongqing is more intense, more visually striking, and harder to forget. They suit different travel styles and the best choice depends on what you're looking for. -
Should you visit Chengdu or Chongqing?
If you can only pick one and it's your first trip to Southwest China, go with Chengdu. It has broader appeal and is more forgiving for first-time visitors to China. If you want somewhere more unusual and don't mind hills and stairs, choose Chongqing. -
Should I fly to Chongqing or Chengdu first?
It depends on where you're coming from. Arriving from Xi'an or northern China by train? Start in Chengdu. Flying from Hong Kong or Southeast Asia? Chongqing's Jiangbei Airport may be more convenient. Either way, the high-speed rail makes it simple to visit both cities on one trip. -
Can you visit both Chengdu and Chongqing in one trip?
Yes — and it's one of the best China itineraries available. The high-speed rail takes about 1–1.5 hours, so a combined trip of 4–6 days works very well. A common approach: fly into one city, take the train to the other, fly out. -
Which city is better for food — Chengdu or Chongqing?
Both are exceptional but different. Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan cuisine, with a wider range of dishes and a more nuanced spice profile. Chongqing is known for its hotpot and xiǎo miàn, which are heavier, oilier, and more aggressively spicy. Serious food travelers should eat in both.
