The Beijing Subway is the fastest way to explore the city, with 29 lines (including 2 airport express lines) covering 900+ km and 523 stations. Key updates for 2025 include:

  • Line 17 fully operational (connecting Tiananmen Square to Future Science City).

  • Line 8 Dahongmen Station open, linking to Line 10 for seamless transfers.

Beijing Subway Operating Hours

Beijing Transportation Map - Getting Around

Beyond the subway, Beijing offers a variety of other public transportation options to choose from:

  • Bus: Beijing’s public bus network covers the city extensively, with numerous routes and excellent accessibility, making it one of the key ways to get around and explore Beijing. Some routes use distance-based fares; remember to tap your card when you board and again when you get off.
  • Taxis: Quick and convenient, but on the pricier side—especially on holidays and during rush hours, hailing one can be challenging. Use ride-hailing apps like DiDi to book a car and cut down on wait times.
  • Airport Express: Connecting Beijing Capital International Airport with the city center, it's fast and convenient, making it a great choice for traveling to and from the airport.
  • Bike sharing: Riding a shared bike through the city isn’t just eco-friendly—it’s an even better way to soak up the charm of Beijing’s streets and alleys.

Our Universal Studios Beijing tour guide was outstanding—knowledgeable, friendly, and very well organized. They managed time efficiently, explained attractions clearly, and helped us skip unnecessary waits. The experience was smooth, enjoyable, and stress-free. Highly recommended for first-time visitors and families wanting the best park experience.

The tour was 100% perfect! We met at 9 a.m.; there's a small shop near the meeting point where you can buy snacks and coffee if you've arrived early and are waiting for the group. Transfer to the wall is in a comfortable bus. We had a guide, Maxim, who was very personable and cheerful, but was always ready to help in any emergency. On the bus, you can buy tickets for two types of tours: red and green. The red route involves ascending and descending on a closed funicular, while the green route involves ascending on an open funicular and descending via a slide. You can also buy a buffet pass from the guide on the bus, as well as a wall visit certificate, medal, or stamp book as a souvenir. I recommend the certificate; they'll write your name and include a photo. There's complimentary tea and snacks in the tour company building. After visiting the wall, you can buy a variety of souvenirs; there are plenty of shops downstairs. Even though we visited the wall in winter, the experience was unforgettable! 👍👍👍

Director Ren is young, beautiful, and has a lovely voice. Our family of nine booked a small group tour, and she contacted us the day before to give us the route. On the day of the Lunar New Year, the place was packed with people, and she was already waiting on the road. When everyone was carrying flags, her little floral umbrella was easy to spot. Her explanations along the way were lively and interesting, and her speaking speed was just right; both the elderly and children listened with great interest. At the end, she even reminded us of the exit and dining directions, which was wonderful.

This time, we were guided by Mr. Zhu, a top scholar from Beijing. He explained the famous attractions and their history in great detail. We visited the park on the fourth day of the Lunar New Year, and it was packed with people. I was very fortunate to have a guided tour; he was very professional, and I had a very enjoyable and fulfilling afternoon.

It was a good tour l, she brought us around and had little in ear things that connected to her microphone. She told us a lot of Chinese history while waiting in the queues. The tour was during CNY holiday so the queues were very long but she kept us all engaged throughout with plenty of history.

The Palace Museum

The Palace Museum in Beijing, also known as the Forbidden City, was the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Covering 7.2 million square feet, it’s grand in scale and awe-inspiring, a place almost every first-time traveler to Beijing visits. The museum displays a vast collection of imperial artifacts, making it a must-visit for understanding the court culture of the Ming and Qing dynasties. You can walk here from Tian'anmen East Station on Line 1 of the subway.

I've always wanted to visit, and reading Asada Jiro's novel made that desire even stronger. It's really spacious, and the historic buildings are beautiful. The exhibits in the Clock Tower and Treasure Museum were also great. I also saw Consort Zhen's Well and the former residence of a eunuch, now a souvenir shop. Leaving the rear gate and looking at the Forbidden City from Jingshan Mountain gave me a better sense of its vastness, which was also wonderful.

Badaling Great Wall

Badaling Great Wall is a section of the Great Wall of China, and it’s the most complete and most representative section. It’s also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is renowned for its steep, rugged terrain. It’s recommended to take the S2 suburban railway line or the dedicated bus line to get there; the nearest subway station is Line 13’s Huoying Station.

Visited the Badaling section — the easiest one to reach from Beijing. Bus 877 costs just 12¥ one way, and tickets (we bought ours on Trip.com) are around 4.5$ for basic entry. The climb is not as hard as it looks, so the cable car isn’t necessary. Yes, it was crowded (holiday week!), but the views are absolutely worth it. Massive, powerful, unreal. 10/10 — even with the crowds. And yes, be ready for people asking to take photos with you 😄
