Beijing Transportation Map - Getting Around

Beyond the subway, Beijing offers a variety of other public transportation options to choose from:

  • Bus: Beijing’s public bus network covers the city extensively, with numerous routes and excellent accessibility, making it one of the key ways to get around and explore Beijing. Some routes use distance-based fares; remember to tap your card when you board and again when you get off.
  • Taxis: Quick and convenient, but on the pricier side—especially on holidays and during rush hours, hailing one can be challenging. Use ride-hailing apps like DiDi to book a car and cut down on wait times.
  • Airport Express: Connecting Beijing Capital International Airport with the city center, it's fast and convenient, making it a great choice for traveling to and from the airport.
  • Bike sharing: Riding a shared bike through the city isn’t just eco-friendly—it’s an even better way to soak up the charm of Beijing’s streets and alleys.

EN. We initially planned to travel independently, but after doing some preliminary calculations, we realized the extra cost for the tour wasn't significant. We would have spent more time figuring out where, where, and how to get there. Plus, we could have exchanged a few words with the group. Everything was as described; we were met in red vests at the metro exit (see photo). Allow at least 1:20 minutes to get to the meeting point by taxi (calculated from the southern entrance to the Temple of Heaven). A guide will meet you in Russian. No need to look for a bus at the bus station; it's parked elsewhere; after meeting, the whole group will go to it. The buffet is good, but you can also eat at the many cafes there. If you want to catch both the red and green buses, that's perfectly fine! Overall, this is additional information. Thank you so much for the tour!

It’s a great experience going through forbidden city. Tour guide provided a vast information of the historical palace and the ancient emperor Qianlong, empress, concubines etc. It is an eye opening to have a chance to look at all the palace ancient stuffs and the place where the emperor has his meeting with the general etc.

Our guide Mr Wang was extremely knowledgeable and humorous. It was an extremely informative tour, and he brought his own materials (prints) to supplement the tour to explain the history of the mansion. Great references to 还珠格格, the famous TV drama featuring a fictitious princess of the Qian Long emperor. You need to be quite fluent in Chinese and have a basic understanding of Chinese imperial history to truly appreciate what Mr Wang is sharing. Suitably impressed with the tour and I will recommend it to any history buff interested in the history of Qing dynasty.

The Palace Museum

The Palace Museum in Beijing, also known as the Forbidden City, was the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Covering 7.2 million square feet, it’s grand in scale and awe-inspiring, a place almost every first-time traveler to Beijing visits. The museum displays a vast collection of imperial artifacts, making it a must-visit for understanding the court culture of the Ming and Qing dynasties. You can walk here from Tian'anmen East Station on Line 1 of the subway.

The Forbidden City is a blast. Even with a short layover, it's a quick hour, but it's better to just run through it. A good four hours would be enough for a thorough look and photos. And don't skimp; take a tour or an audio guide.

The place is worth the trip, but it might be tiring for elderly people if they're in a hurry. The photos are beautiful, but it's cold!

Lucy was our english guide. Patient and knowledgeable. And she answers questions. The history was interestingly described to us. We were a little late due to traffic but she still manage to communicate with us to the meeting point and share to us what we had missed out. Pace of the tour was not rush.

Badaling Great Wall

Badaling Great Wall is a section of the Great Wall of China, and it’s the most complete and most representative section. It’s also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is renowned for its steep, rugged terrain. It’s recommended to take the S2 suburban railway line or the dedicated bus line to get there; the nearest subway station is Line 13’s Huoying Station.

The wall is definitely a bucket list activity as the feeling of climbing all 12 towers is overwhelming. Would advise to buy one way cable car ticket up to tower 8 and walk to tower 4 to take the ride down.

Of course it’s interesting but do not forget to take clothes with you on top of wall, even during July (weather was too hot in city +32), on the top of mountain it was windy and cold. I can’t even imagine how cold there during autumn or winter

It's a worthwhile place to visit, but the climb is quite tiring. We bought round-trip cable car tickets; I'd recommend just buying a one-way ticket unless you plan to hike up and down.
