Beijing Transportation Map - Getting Around

Beyond the subway, Beijing offers a variety of other public transportation options to choose from:

  • Bus: Beijing’s public bus network covers the city extensively, with numerous routes and excellent accessibility, making it one of the key ways to get around and explore Beijing. Some routes use distance-based fares; remember to tap your card when you board and again when you get off.
  • Taxis: Quick and convenient, but on the pricier side—especially on holidays and during rush hours, hailing one can be challenging. Use ride-hailing apps like DiDi to book a car and cut down on wait times.
  • Airport Express: Connecting Beijing Capital International Airport with the city center, it's fast and convenient, making it a great choice for traveling to and from the airport.
  • Bike sharing: Riding a shared bike through the city isn’t just eco-friendly—it’s an even better way to soak up the charm of Beijing’s streets and alleys.

Our Universal Studios Beijing tour guide was outstanding—knowledgeable, friendly, and very well organized. They managed time efficiently, explained attractions clearly, and helped us skip unnecessary waits. The experience was smooth, enjoyable, and stress-free. Highly recommended for first-time visitors and families wanting the best park experience.

This is a great tour if you don't want to delve into the details and figure out navigation yourself. Two route options, green and red, are offered on the bus for 140 yuan per person. The green route has long lines, but they're perfectly reasonable. However, we didn't have time to go down the toboggan run because of the line. Lunch is included during your time on the wall (we recommend booking the tour with lunch, as it's a bit cheaper). The lunch is delicious, with a wide selection. Souvenirs are also offered on the bus: a notebook with wall stamps (you can bring your own and display it at the gift shop near the organizers' visitor center) and a glass-framed certificate for conquering the wall. Special thanks to our guide, Misha, for his guidance, the tour, and his attentiveness to each participant.

This time, we booked the "Scholar's Tale" guided tour. Our guide, Mr. Wang, is very experienced and has a thorough understanding of the history and surrounding area. His explanations were excellent, helping those of us who weren't familiar with the history or the origins of the stories to understand their meanings. Choosing this tour made our visit to the Forbidden City a breeze! Highly recommended!

Overall, the visit to Prince Gong's Mansion was a great experience, thanks to Mr. Zhu, the top student from Beijing, for his excellent explanations. He was very clear and patient, and the route was well-planned, avoiding any sense of rushing. The tour also included breaks to allow for leisurely enjoyment of the scenery while conserving energy. The whole experience was relaxed and comfortable, without feeling particularly tired. I had a wonderful time and would highly recommend it!

The Palace Museum

The Palace Museum in Beijing, also known as the Forbidden City, was the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Covering 7.2 million square feet, it’s grand in scale and awe-inspiring, a place almost every first-time traveler to Beijing visits. The museum displays a vast collection of imperial artifacts, making it a must-visit for understanding the court culture of the Ming and Qing dynasties. You can walk here from Tian'anmen East Station on Line 1 of the subway.

It's a historic site, a very large complex, and it's easy to get lost. You should take an audio guide or go with a group to get a sense of the place. I really liked the second half of the palace, the Inner Courtyard, and the Garden. It's definitely best to get a ticket that includes the Treasury and the Clock Museum; they have very beautiful and rare exhibits. Cons: crowded, poorly organized line at the entrance. It's best to arrive at opening time. You can approach the South Gate from the east side instead of through the square. It's also very hot in the summer; we had a hard time finding the water shops.

The guide was excellent and the place was splendid. We received good explanations with touches of humor. We had short breaks to sit down and buy water. They also gave us advice for the rest of our visit after the guided tour. Very satisfied!

Finally, I had the opportunity to enter the Forbidden City without waiting in line or trying to hack the online registration. The tour was very reasonably priced, and the organizer communicated with me via WeChat and explained everything in detail: meeting point, directions, and directions. I definitely recommend it!

Badaling Great Wall

Badaling Great Wall is a section of the Great Wall of China, and it’s the most complete and most representative section. It’s also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is renowned for its steep, rugged terrain. It’s recommended to take the S2 suburban railway line or the dedicated bus line to get there; the nearest subway station is Line 13’s Huoying Station.

The place is certainly beautiful, but we were unlucky with the weather. We could only see within 20 meters. But no matter, we went, saw everything, and loved it. Take the cable car, but keep in mind that not all of it has steps. There's a gentle path along the wall itself, and the slope is so steep that we had to hold on to the handrail with one hand to keep from sliding down. In our weather, that was especially true. So, choose good weather.

A very beautiful park. We bought a ticket with a brochure, but they didn't give us one. The entrance near the Xi Yuan metro station was more convenient for us. There are a lot of Chinese tour groups, so be aware that it will be very crowded.
