Yes, Huaqiangbei is absolutely worth visiting if you’re in any way interested in electronics and the latest tech. It’s big, confusing, and overwhelming, and the prices sometimes aren’t even cheaper than what you’d be able to find at a regular store.

The best place to start for a visit to Huaqiangbei is to figure out which market sells what so you know where you want to go. 

What Should I Buy as a Tourist at Huaqiangbei? 

If you’re visiting the Huaqiangbei electronics market and looking to pick up a few things while you’re there, you should focus on items like the following: 

• 📱 Smart phones and tablets and their accessories like screen protectors, charging cables, cases, etc.
• 🚁 Drones, their different parts and accessories
• 📷 Cameras and gear like stabilizers, tripods, and mounts

• Rated watt-hour (Wh) capacity
• Look for the CCC mark (China Compulsory Certification)

That last point matters a lot if you’re planning to take a domestic flight in China. Since June 28 of 2025, the CAAC (China's Civil Aviation Administration) has banned power banks without a clear, legible CCC mark from all domestic flights within mainland China.

The second best way to spot a counterfeit is the price. If it’s 40% cheaper than the equivalent price in your home country, it’s a fake.

Yes, you can get a tax refund for buying at Huaqiangbei as long as the stall is participating in the program and depending on your status in China. 

Shenzhen city has set up a one-stop-shop for payments, currency exchange, and tax refunds in the Huaqiangbei area, which is the place to go to get a refund done. However, not every store participates in the departure tax refund program, and the eligibility also depends on what kind of goods you’re buying, your status in China, and more. 

Can You Fly Home with Huaqiangbei Purchases?

The flight and customs rules around electronics purchases are worth checking before you buy. 

Power banks and batteries go in your carry-on only; that’s everything from laptops to power banks to detachable batteries from a drone. Under 100 Wh is generally fine. Between 100 and 160 Wh and you’ll need to check with your airline first. Over 160 Wh is not allowed on passenger aircraft. And remember that if you're taking a domestic flight within China (including a connecting leg to an international flight), power bank needs a visible CCC mark or it will be confiscated at security.

Drones can be tricky to bring home. Many countries require registration, radio frequency approval, or have outright import restrictions. Check your destination's rules before buying.
